Phoenix Contact Axioline and Inline I/O

Phoenix Contact / Axioline and Inline I/O

Axioline F modules are complete. Axioline Smart Elements are not, and cannot communicate on their own.

Axioline is the current Phoenix Contact modular I/O system, replacing the older Inline range. It runs under PLCnext controllers, Phoenix bus couplers, and third-party PLCs over PROFINET, Modbus/TCP and other protocols.

Smart Elements do not work alone

Start here, because it is the difference between a working station and a box of modules.

Phoenix states that Axioline Smart Elements are system-free modules without bus communication. The element supports the I/O function only. Bus communication happens only in combination with a backplane, which acts as an adapter.

Phoenix flags the point on the product itself: an AXL SE module needs further products for operation.

Order number Type Slots
1088135 AXL F BP SE4 4 Smart Element slots
1088136 AXL F BP SE6 6 Smart Element slots

Order Smart Elements without a backplane and nothing communicates. Tell us the module list and we will include the right backplane.

By contrast, Axioline F modules are complete

Phoenix specifies AXL F modules as including the bus base module and Axioline F connectors.

So the two halves of the range work opposite ways. An AXL F module arrives ready to clip on. An AXL SE module arrives needing a backplane. Worth knowing before you compare prices between them.

The flexible part

Within one Axioline F station you can combine classic AXL F modules with AXL F backplanes carrying Smart Elements, in any arrangement. Smart Elements plug into any position in the backplane.

They also run on existing Axioline F bus couplers and Axiocontrol controllers, including PLCnext Control devices. So adding Smart Elements to an installed Axioline F station does not mean replacing the head.

How the designation decodes

Take AXL F DI16/1 HS 1H.

Part Meaning
AXL F Axioline F system
DI16 16 digital inputs
/1 1-conductor connection technology
HS High speed
1H Connector variant

The system prefix

Prefix System Protection
AXL F Axioline F, cabinet mounted IP20
AXL SE Axioline Smart Elements IP20
AXL E Axioline E, on-machine with M12 IP65 and IP67
IB IL Inline, the previous generation IP20

The conductor number

Code Connection
/1 1-conductor
/2 2-conductor
/4 4-wire

This decides how the field wiring lands. A 3-wire sensor needs a module that gives it a supply terminal per channel, which the 1-conductor version does not. Check the existing wiring before ordering.

Bus couplers

Order number Type Network
2701815 AXL F BK PN PROFINET

Up to 63 Axioline F devices connect to one bus coupler. That is the station limit to design against.

Modbus/TCP and UDP couplers exist in the range, including an extreme conditions version.

Integrating with a non-Phoenix PLC

Device descriptions for Phoenix Contact controllers are built into PC Worx and PLCnext Engineer.

For other programming systems, GSDML files are available from the Phoenix Contact product page for the specific bus coupler. So an Axioline F station will integrate with a Siemens or third-party PROFINET master, but you need the GSDML file to configure it.

Worth knowing before commissioning rather than during.

Axioline F modules

Order number Type Specification
2701722 AXL F DI16/1 HS 1H 16 digital inputs, 24 V DC, 1-conductor, input filter under 5 microseconds
2688022 AXL F DI16/4 2F 16 digital inputs, 24 V DC, 4-wire
2688349 AXL F DO16/1 1H 16 digital outputs, 24 V DC, 500 mA, 1-conductor

All at 100 Mbps local bus and IP20, including bus base module and connectors.

The HS variant has an input filter under 5 microseconds. That is for genuinely fast signals such as high-speed counting or position capture. A standard module filters more heavily and will miss short pulses.

If you are replacing a module on an application that counts or captures, check whether the original was HS.

The outputs are protected against short circuit and overload, which is worth knowing when diagnosing a dead output: the module may have protected itself rather than failed.

Axioline Smart Elements

Order number Type Specification
1088127 AXL SE DI16/1 16 digital inputs, 24 V DC, 1-conductor
1088129 AXL SE DO16/1 16 digital outputs, 24 V DC, 500 mA, 1-conductor
1088062 AXL SE AI4 I 4-20 4 analog inputs, 4 to 20 mA
1088104 AXL SE AI4 U 0-10 4 analog inputs, 0 to 10 V
1088123 AXL SE AO4 I 4-20 4 analog outputs, 4 to 20 mA
1088126 AXL SE AO4 U 0-10 4 analog outputs, 0 to 10 V
1088106 AXL SE RTD4 PT100 4 RTD inputs, Pt100

The I and U in an analog part number are current and voltage. AXL SE AI4 I 4-20 is a current input; AXL SE AI4 U 0-10 is a voltage input. Different parts, and a current loop will not read on a voltage module.

A Smart Elements serial communication module is also available, supporting transparent protocol, end-to-end protocol and Modbus/RTU as client or server over RS-485, at 100 bps to 230400 bps with a 64 byte process data width.

Specialty Axioline F modules

Type Notes
PROFIsafe digital input Functional safety. 4 inputs for 2-channel or 8 for 1-channel assignment
IEC 61850-3 digital input 8 inputs, 2-conductor, for substation applications
Intrinsically safe RTD 8 analog inputs, extreme conditions version, shielded 2, 3 or 4-conductor
Extreme conditions bus couplers Wider environmental range

A restriction on the PROFIsafe modules

Phoenix states the Axioline F PROFIsafe digital input module is only for connection to a Phoenix Contact or Siemens controller.

If your PLC is neither, that module is not an option regardless of the network. Check before specifying a safety station.

The same caution about safety assessments applies as on our other safety pages: a like-for-like replacement preserves the assessment, a substitution may not.

Inline, the previous generation

The IB IL Inline range preceded Axioline and is still installed widely.

Inline is a terminal-based system where modules clip together on the rail. It is mature and increasingly hard to find new, which is where we are useful.

Inline and Axioline are not interchangeable. Different mechanical system, different bus. Moving from one to the other replaces the whole station.

What we can supply

Current production. Axioline F modules and bus couplers, Smart Elements and backplanes, Axioline E on-machine I/O and connectors. Quoted with a delivered lead time.

Mature and discontinued. Inline IB IL modules and terminals. Surplus and tested used, which is often the only way to expand or repair an installed Inline station.

The parts that hold up a build. Backplanes, connectors and bus base modules.
