Phoenix Contact Terminal Blocks
Phoenix Contact / Terminal blocks
The UT range with confirmed order numbers, the colour and function suffixes, and why the rated size is not the conductor range.
Terminal blocks are the highest-volume item in any panel build and the most common thing to run short of. Phoenix Contact CLIPLINE is the range most New Zealand panel builders work with.
The rated size is not the conductor range
Worth understanding before you size a terminal, because the two figures are different and the range is wider than people assume.
| Type | Rated cross section | Actual conductor range | Current |
|---|---|---|---|
| UT 2,5 | 2.5 mm sq | 0.14 to 4 mm sq | 24 A |
| UT 4 | 4 mm sq | 0.14 to 6 mm sq | 32 A |
| UT 6 | 6 mm sq | 0.2 to 10 mm sq | 41 A |
A UT 6 accepts up to 10 mm sq even though it is a 6 mm sq terminal. Phoenix notes the large wiring space takes solid and stranded conductors without ferrules, even above the nominal cross section.
So if you have a 10 mm sq conductor you may not need to step up a frame size. Worth checking before specifying larger and more expensive terminals than the job needs.
The current rating follows the rated size, not the conductor you happen to fit, so size on the load as well.
The suffix tells you colour and function
Same terminal, different suffix, different order number. This is where orders go wrong.
| Suffix | Meaning | Colour |
|---|---|---|
| None | Standard feed-through | Grey |
| BU | Feed-through, neutral convention | Blue |
| PE | Protective conductor, earth | Green-yellow |
| TWIN | Two conductors per side | Varies |
| QUATTRO | Four conductors, two per side | Varies |
| TB, TTB | Double-level terminal block | Varies |
| D- prefix | End cover or partition plate | Varies |
A PE terminal is not just a green-yellow feed-through. It connects to the DIN rail through a snap-on PE foot, so the earth path is through the rail rather than a wire. Fitting a standard terminal in its place breaks that path.
UT range, confirmed order numbers
| Order number | Type | Colour | Rating | Conductor range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3044076 | UT 2,5 | Grey | 1000 V, 24 A | 0.14 to 4 mm sq |
| 3044089 | UT 2,5 BU | Blue | 1000 V, 24 A | 0.14 to 4 mm sq |
| 3044102 | UT 4 | Grey | 1000 V, 32 A | 0.14 to 6 mm sq |
| 3044131 | UT 6 | Grey | 1000 V, 41 A | 0.2 to 10 mm sq |
| 3044144 | UT 6 BU | Blue | 1000 V, 41 A | 0.2 to 10 mm sq |
| 3044157 | UT 6-PE | Green-yellow | Protective conductor | 0.2 to 10 mm sq |
All mount on NS 35/7,5 or NS 35/15 DIN rail. Screw connection, M4 on the UT 6-PE.
The UT 4 is 6.2 mm wide, which is the figure to use when calculating rail length for a terminal strip.
A note on published specifications
You will find different figures for the same part on reseller sites. We work from the manufacturer data, and where a reseller and the manufacturer disagree we go with the manufacturer.
If a specification matters for your application, tell us and we will confirm it against the Phoenix Contact datasheet rather than a catalogue listing.
The UT sub-families
| Family | What it is |
|---|---|
| UT | Standard feed-through, screw connection |
| UTN | Larger cross sections |
| UTI | Low profile, for restricted panel depth |
| UTTB | Double-level |
| UT-PE | Protective conductor |
| UK | Earlier screw generation, still widely installed |
UTI is the one to know about for shallow panels
The UTI series has a low vertical profile, only 58 mm high on standard TS35 DIN rail, and supports conductor cross sections up to 35 mm sq at 110 A.
If you are fitting into a shallow enclosure or a door, that height difference is often what decides whether the job fits. UTI also offers a quick-install busbar option that cuts assembly time, and standard phase wiring colours.
Material is UL94-V2 rated polyamide.
Confirmed UTN and UTI numbers
| Order number | Type | Specification |
|---|---|---|
| 3245053 | UTN 16, blue | Single level, screw, 400 V, 76 A, 6 to 25 mm sq |
| 3073827 | UTI 16, grey | Single level, screw, low profile |
Note the UTN 16 is rated 400 V where the UT range is 1000 V. Larger cross section does not mean higher voltage rating. Check both figures against your application.
Connection technologies
| Family | Connection | Wiring |
|---|---|---|
| UT, UK | Screw | Torque to spec, no retightening needed |
| ST | Spring-cage | Screwdriver opens the clamp |
| PT | Push-in | Ferruled conductor pushes straight in, no tool |
| QT | Quick connection | Insulation displacement |
Push-in is the fastest by a wide margin on a large terminal strip, because a conductor with a ferrule goes in without a tool. That matters on a panel build with several hundred terminations.
Spring-cage and push-in both avoid the retorque question entirely, which is why they are common in vibration-prone applications.
Confirmed PT and ST numbers
| Order number | Type |
|---|---|
| 3209549 | PT 2,5-TWIN |
| 3208197 | PT 1,5/S-QUATTRO |
| 3211797 | PT 4-QUATTRO |
| 3210583 | PTTB 2,5-PV |
| 3030417 | D-ST 2,5 |
| 3036563 | ST 4-HESILA 250, 5x20 |
Fuse terminals
The HESILED and HESILA families are fuse terminal blocks with an LED indicator that lights when the fuse blows. That turns a blown fuse from a hunt into a glance.
| Order number | Type |
|---|---|
| 3000540 | UK 5-HESILED24 N |
| 3246434 | TB 4-HESILED 24, 5x20 |
| 3036563 | ST 4-HESILA 250, 5x20 |
Reading these: the number after HESILED is the LED voltage, so HESILED**24** carries a 24 V LED. The bracketed figure such as 5x20 is the glass fuse dimension in millimetres.
Fuses are ordered separately. The terminal does not come with one.
Disconnect and double-level terminals
| Order number | Type | Function |
|---|---|---|
| 2715966 | DIK 1,5 | Disconnect terminal |
| 3003020 | D-UK 4/10 | End cover |
| 3030417 | D-ST 2,5 | End cover |
| 3210583 | PTTB 2,5-PV | Double-level, push-in |
Double-level terminals halve the rail length for the same number of terminations. Useful when a panel is already full and someone wants to add circuits.
Disconnect terminals have a blade or lever that isolates the circuit without removing wires, which makes commissioning and fault finding much faster.
The accessories that get forgotten
A terminal strip is not just terminals. These are the items most often left off an order.
| Item | Purpose |
|---|---|
| End covers, D- prefix | Close the last terminal in a run. One per run |
| End clamps, CLIPFIX and E/UK | Stop the strip sliding along the rail |
| Partition plates, ATP | Separate groups or voltage levels |
| Bridges and jumpers, FBS | Link adjacent terminals. Standardised across the range |
| Markers, ZB and UC | Terminal identification |
| DIN rail, NS 35/7,5 and NS 35/15 | The rail itself |
Every run of terminals needs an end cover and two end clamps. They are cheap, they are always forgotten, and a panel without them looks unfinished and does not stay put.
Send us the terminal schedule and we will include all of it.
The Reakdyn screw locking principle
Phoenix Contact states that on UT terminal blocks it is not necessary to retighten the terminal screws, because they are prevented from loosening by the Reakdyn principle.
If your maintenance schedule includes a periodic retorque of every terminal in the panel, that step is not required on UT blocks. Worth knowing if you are writing or following a maintenance plan.
Other UT design features
- Conductors connect with or without ferrules at the nominal cross section
- The cable entry funnel accepts ferrules with plastic collars
- Closed screw shafts guide the screwdriver, which speeds up wiring and reduces slips
- Snap-on PE foot and standardised bridges save time building a strip
- Cross sections up to 240 mm sq wire gas-tight with long-term stability
