Phoenix Contact Power Supplies
Phoenix Contact / Power supplies
Four tiers, three TRIO generations, and a naming quirk where one family is rated in amps and another in watts.
Phoenix Contact DIN rail power supplies sit in most New Zealand control panels. They fail, they get replaced, and the replacement has to match the load and the panel space.
Watch the rating unit
This catches people because the families do not use the same convention.
| Family | Rated in | Example |
|---|---|---|
| QUINT | Amps | QUINT-PS/1AC/24DC/10 is 10 A |
| TRIO | Amps | TRIO-PS/1AC/24DC/5 is 5 A |
| UNO | Watts | UNO-PS/1AC/24DC/240W is 240 W |
A UNO rated 240W is a 10 A supply at 24 V. If you are comparing across families, convert before you compare, because 240W and 10 sit in the same position in the designation and mean the same thing.
The four tiers
| Family | Positioning |
|---|---|
| QUINT | Highest specification. Diagnostics, preventive function monitoring, high power reserves |
| TRIO | Standard functionality, optimised for machine building |
| STEP | Basic, compact |
| UNO | Compact, cost-focused |
Phoenix describes the TRIO range as perfected for machine building, with an extremely robust electrical and mechanical design for challenging ambient conditions, and a space-saving format across single and three-phase modules.
Do not substitute down a tier without checking. A QUINT in a panel may have been chosen for its power reserve or its diagnostic contact, and a UNO of the same output will not do those things.
The generation is in the name
TRIO has three generations and they are different parts.
| Name | Generation | Connection |
|---|---|---|
| TRIO-PS | Original | Screw |
| TRIO-PS-2G | Second | Push-in |
| TRIO3-PS | Third | Push-in |
QUINT follows the same idea: QUINT-PS and QUINT4-PS are different generations.
So a TRIO-PS/1AC/24DC/5 and a TRIO-PS-2G/1AC/24DC/5 have the same output and are not the same part. Check the terminals as well, because the newer generations moved to push-in.
How the designation decodes
Take TRIO-PS/1AC/24DC/5, order number 2866310.
| Part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| TRIO-PS | Family and generation |
| 1AC | Single-phase AC input |
| 24DC | 24 V DC output |
| 5 | 5 A output |
Input codes
| Code | Input |
|---|---|
| 1AC | Single-phase AC |
| 100-240AC | Single-phase, wide range |
| 3AC, 3X400-500AC | Three-phase AC |
| 24DC | 24 V DC input, a DC to DC converter |
A 24DC input unit is a converter, not a mains power supply. QUINT-PS-24DC/24DC/10 takes 24 V in and gives isolated 24 V out. Fitting one where a mains supply was expected gives you nothing.
Confirmed TRIO order numbers
| Order number | Type | Output | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2866310 | TRIO-PS/1AC/24DC/5 | 24 V DC, 5 A, 120 W | Input 100 to 240 V AC, 50/60 Hz |
| 2903148 | TRIO-PS-2G/1AC/24DC/5 | 24 V DC, 5 A | Push-in connection |
| 1159039 | TRIO3-PS/1AC/24DC/20 | 24 V DC, 20 A | Push-in, adjustable 24 to 28 V DC |
The TRIO3 output is adjustable from 24 to 28 V DC. Useful on a long DC run where volt drop matters, since you can lift the supply end to land 24 V at the load.
Confirmed QUINT order numbers
| Order number | Type |
|---|---|
| 2866750 | QUINT-PS/1AC/24DC/5 |

Also in the range: QUINT-PS/1AC/24DC/20, a 20 A single-phase unit.
UNO, and a superseded part worth knowing
| Order number | Type | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 2904372 | UNO-PS/1AC/24DC/240W | Superseded. Phoenix directs new systems to 1096432 |
Phoenix Contact states plainly that 1096432 should be used in new systems.
That matters two ways. If you are building new, specify the current part. If you are replacing a failed 2904372 in an existing panel, you may still want the original for a like-for-like fit, and that is where we can help.
Buffer modules and UPS are not power supplies
Easy to mistake in a parts list.
| Type | What it does |
|---|---|
| QUINT-BUFFER | Holds the 24 V rail up through a brief supply dip. Sits alongside the supply |
| QUINT-UPS | Uninterruptible supply with a battery, for longer outages |
| QUINT-DIODE, QUINT-ORING | Redundancy modules for combining two supplies |
A QUINT-BUFFER/24DC/24DC/40 has 24 V in and 24 V out and is not a mains power supply. If your panel has one, it works with the supply rather than instead of it. Replacing a failed supply with a buffer gives you a panel that will not power up.
Redundancy modules matter where two supplies feed one rail. Wiring two supplies in parallel without one is not the same thing.
What to check when replacing a supply
Output current or wattage. Note which unit the family uses.
Output voltage. 24 V DC is usual but 48 V and 12 V exist in the range.
Input phase. Single or three phase, and whether it is actually a DC to DC converter.
Connection type. Screw on older generations, push-in on newer. If the panel is wired for one, the other means reterminating.
Width. A higher-rated supply is usually wider. On a full rail that decides whether it fits.
Signal contacts. Many units have a DC OK relay or signal output wired into the PLC. A replacement without it leaves an input dead and a fault that looks like something else.
Send us the order number and we will match all of it. If the label is unreadable, tell us the output voltage and current and what else is wired to it.
Sizing a new supply
Two things worth saying because they cause callbacks.
Inrush matters more than steady state. A panel full of contactor coils, relay modules and PLC power supplies draws far more at switch-on than in normal running. QUINT units in particular are specified with power reserves for exactly this.
Leave headroom. Panels get added to. A supply sized exactly to today's load is the reason someone is replacing it in three years.
What we can supply
Current production. QUINT, QUINT4, TRIO, TRIO-2G, TRIO3, STEP and UNO across the range, plus buffer modules, UPS, redundancy modules and batteries. Quoted with a delivered lead time.
Superseded and discontinued. Earlier QUINT and TRIO generations, and parts like the 2904372 where the current replacement does not fit the existing panel. Surplus and tested used.
That second category is where we are most useful. A like-for-like replacement in an existing panel avoids reterminating and rewiring the signal contacts.
