Omron Sysmac NJ and NX Controllers
Omron / Sysmac NJ and NX
Every NJ and NX controller model, the NX I/O range, and the two-digit suffix that changes what the controller can do.
Sysmac is the current Omron machine automation platform. NJ and NX controllers, NX I/O over EtherCAT, and everything programmed from Sysmac Studio.
All current production, so these are supply jobs quoted with a delivered lead time.
NX I/O does not work with CJ or CS
Stated up front because it decides project scope.
NJ and NX use an EtherCAT-based I/O architecture. CJ1W and CS1W units do not work on them at all. There is no adapter and no partial path.
Moving a CJ or CS1 machine to Sysmac replaces every I/O module. Budget it as a rebuild.
The suffix that changes the controller
On NJ501 and NJ101, a trailing 20 instead of 00 is not a minor variant.
| Model | Difference |
|---|---|
| NJ501-1300 | Standard |
| NJ501-1320 | Adds DB Connection Service |
| NJ101-1000 | Standard |
| NJ101-1020 | Adds DB Connection Service |
The DB Connection Service lets the controller talk directly to a database. If your application logs to SQL, you need the 20 variant and the standard one will not do it.
The same pattern runs through NX102: NX102-1000 versus NX102-1020, and so on.
NX1P2 compact controllers
| Model | I/O | Output type |
|---|---|---|
| NX1P2-9024DT | 24 point | Transistor NPN |
| NX1P2-9024DT1 | 24 point | Transistor PNP |
| NX1P2-1040DT | 40 point | Transistor NPN |
| NX1P2-1040DT1 | 40 point | Transistor PNP |
| NX1P2-1140DT | 40 point | Transistor NPN |
| NX1P2-1140DT1 | 40 point | Transistor PNP |
DT is sinking NPN and DT1 is sourcing PNP, the same convention as the CP series. They wire differently at the load and are not interchangeable.

| NJ301-1200 | 8 axes on older versions |

Axis count depends on firmware and software version
Worth knowing before you buy a used controller expecting a given axis count.
Omron states the higher axis figures are achieved with a CPU at unit version 1.06 or later combined with Sysmac Studio version 1.07 or higher. In other combinations the maximum is 8 axes on an NJ301-1200 or 4 axes on an NJ301-1100.
So the number on the box is a ceiling, not a guarantee. The unit version and your software version decide what you actually get.

Three configuration rules worth knowing
End covers are included, unusually
On most platforms the terminator is a separate order people forget. Not here. Omron supplies one NX-END02 with the NX1P2 CPU unit and one NX-END01 with the EtherCAT Coupler Unit.
So do not add one to the order unless you have lost it.
Safety units connect through the coupler, not the CPU
Omron is explicit: Safety CPU, Safety Input and Safety Output units connect to the NX1P2 CPU via the EtherCAT Coupler Unit. Not directly to the CPU.
If you are specifying a safety system on an NX1P2, the coupler is a required part of the architecture rather than an option.
Additional I/O power supply units
Where I/O power is supplied from the NX bus to units connected to the CPU, one or more NX-PF additional I/O power supply units are needed. The requirement depends on the unit mix.
Tell us the full unit list and we will check the power system rather than leaving you to find out on commissioning.
Sysmac Studio licensing
Worth budgeting for, because it is not bundled the way some platforms are.
Omron states you must purchase a DVD and the required number of licenses the first time, and that each model of licence does not include a DVD. Multi licences are available in 3, 10, 30 or 50.
So a first Sysmac project is hardware plus software plus licences. If you are quoting a machine build, do not leave that off.

We buy Sysmac
Current generation hardware holds its value well. If you have surplus from a cancelled or completed project, we are interested. See Sell To Us.

Send us your model numbers
Include the full number with the trailing digits, since a 20 ending is a different controller. On NX1P2, check whether you need DT or DT1. If you are building a station, send the unit list and we will check the power system and coupler requirement. Quotes in NZD including GST.
