Allen-Bradley CompactLogix

Allen-Bradley / CompactLogix

Every 5069 controller and Compact 5000 I/O module, plus the full 1769 Compact I/O range. Two generations that do not share I/O.

CompactLogix is the mid-range Rockwell platform and the one most New Zealand machine builders and smaller plants run. It uses the same Studio 5000 software as ControlLogix and comes in two distinct generations that people frequently confuse.

Know which generation you have

Generation Controller prefix I/O prefix Status
CompactLogix 5380 and 5480 5069-L3xx, 5069-L4xx 5069 Compact 5000 I/O Current
CompactLogix 5370 1769-L1x, L2x, L3x 1769 Compact I/O Mature, widely installed
CompactLogix L4x 1768 1769 Compact I/O Older
Early CompactLogix 1769-L2x, L3x 1769 Compact I/O Older

1769 Compact I/O and 5069 Compact 5000 I/O are different systems and do not interchange. A 5069 controller does not take 1769 modules and vice versa.

If you are expanding a 1769 system you need 1769 modules, and those are getting harder to find. If you are building new, 5069 is where Rockwell is developing.

CompactLogix 5380 controllers

The number carries the memory size. L306 is 600 KB, L310 is 1 MB, L320 is 2 MB and so on.

The M means Integrated Motion over EtherNet/IP. Not every CompactLogix 5380 supports it. If you are driving Kinetix axes you need an M variant.

Removable terminal blocks

RTBs do not ship with 5069 Compact I/O modules. You must order them separately.

5069-RTB6-SPRING 6 terminal spring RTB
5069-RTB4-SPRING 4 terminal spring RTB
5069-RTB64-SPRING Kit containing both spring RTBs

This is the opposite of the 1769 range, where the terminal block is built in. Moving between generations, it is an easy thing to miss.

Two 5069 installation notes

Horizontal mounting only

Rockwell states CompactLogix 5380 systems can only be mounted horizontally. Minimum clearance to enclosure walls, wireways and adjacent equipment varies with operating temperature.

Leakage current on solid state outputs

To limit the effects of leakage current through solid state outputs, Rockwell recommends a loading resistor in parallel with the load. For 24 V DC operation that is a 5.6 kilohm, 0.5 W resistor.

Worth knowing if a solid state output is failing to fully de-energise a high impedance load.

1769 specialty modules

1769-ARM Address reserve module, holds a slot for a future module
1769-SM2 Communication module
1769-AENTR EtherNet/IP adapter for remote 1769 banks

The 1769-ARM is worth knowing about. It reserves a slot so the configuration stays valid before the real module is fitted. Useful during staged commissioning, and cheap. The 5069-ARM does the same job on the current generation.

1769 power supplies, end caps and cables

Catalogue number Description
1769-PA2 Power supply, AC input
1769-PB2 Power supply, 24 V DC input
1769-PA4 Power supply, AC input, higher capacity
1769-PB4 Power supply, 24 V DC input, higher capacity
1769-ECR Right end cap, terminates the bank
1769-ECL Left end cap
1769-CRR1 Right to right expansion cable
1769-CRL1 Right to left expansion cable
1769-CLL1 Left to left expansion cable

Conformal coated versions of most 1769 modules exist with a K suffix, for example 1769-IQ16K, 1769-OB16K, 1769-OW16K.

The end cap is the part people forget. A 1769 bank will not run without one, and it is a cheap item that stops a whole commissioning day.

Good news on 1769 terminal blocks

Unlike ControlLogix, SLC 500 and the 5069 range, each 1769 I/O module includes a built-in removable terminal block with a fingersafe cover. You do not order those separately.

Worth knowing so you are not adding parts you do not need.

Reading a 1769 number

Letters Meaning
IQ DC input
IA, IM AC input, 120 V and 240 V
OB DC sourcing output
OV DC sinking output
OA AC triac output
OW Relay output
IF Analog input
OF Analog output
IR, IT RTD and thermocouple
I suffix Isolated, as in OW8I
F suffix Fast, as in IQ16F
C or V suffix Current or voltage, as in OF8C and OF8V
K suffix Conformal coated
X in the middle Combination module, as in IF4XOF2

The digits give the point or channel count. The 5069 range follows the same letter logic.

Three things to check before ordering

Electronic keying

Same as ControlLogix. If a replacement module has a different series or firmware revision from what the project expects and keying is set to Exact Match, the module will not come online even though it is physically identical. Send us the series letter.

Power supply capacity on the bank

Each 1769 bank has a current budget and every module consumes from it. A bank that has had modules added over the years can be close to the limit, and the next one tips it over. If you are adding rather than replacing, tell us what is already in the bank.

Studio 5000 version

5069 controllers require reasonably current Studio 5000. Older 1769 CompactLogix may be on RSLogix 5000. Tell us which you are running.

Migrating from SLC 500

CompactLogix is where Rockwell points SLC 500 users. Rockwell's named route off an exhausted 1747-L553 is a 5069-L320ER, or the process variant 5069-L350ER, on Studio 5000 v33 or later.

The SLC page carries Rockwell's module by module cross-reference, including the 1492 conversion modules that let you keep existing field wiring. Note that the 1746 I/O modules themselves are not drop-in compatible and must be replaced with 5069 modules in a 5069 rack.

Our position is the same there as here. Keep the old system running with surplus spares while it suits you and migrate on a planned outage rather than on a failure.

What we can supply

Current production. 5069 CompactLogix 5380 and 5480 controllers, Compact GuardLogix safety controllers, the full Compact 5000 I/O range and RTBs. Quoted with a delivered lead time.

Mature and older. 1769 controllers, the full Compact I/O range above, power supplies, end caps and expansion cables. Surplus and tested used, which is often the only practical way to expand or repair an existing 1769 system.
