Allen-Bradley PanelView Terminals
Allen-Bradley / PanelView
Both catalogue numbers decode. Here is how to read a 2711 and a 2711P, and the comms code that decides whether a modern terminal can replace yours.
PanelView is the Allen-Bradley operator terminal family. It spans thirty years and several incompatible generations, and the catalogue numbers look similar enough that people order the wrong one regularly.
Which generation do you have?
| Prefix | Range | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 2715 | PanelView 5500 and 5510 | Current |
| 2711P ending 9P | PanelView Plus 7 Performance | Current |
| 2711P ending 8S | PanelView Plus 7 Standard | Current |
| 2711R | PanelView 800 | Current, small terminals |
| 2711P ending 4x or 5x, and 2711PC | PanelView Plus 6 and Plus 6 Compact | Largely discontinued |
| 2711 | PanelView Standard, 300 through 1400 | Entire line discontinued |
| 2711E | PanelView Enhanced | Long obsolete |
How to read a 2711 PanelView Standard number
Take 2711-T10C15L1.
| Part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 2711 | PanelView Standard |
| T | Input. K is keypad, B is keypad and touch, T is touch only |
| 10 | Model. 5 is 550, 6 is 600, 9 is 900, 10 is 1000, 12 is 1200, 14 is 1400 |
| C | Display. A is monochrome, C is colour, G is grayscale |
| 15 | Communications. See the table below |
| L1 | DC power |
The communication code, and why it matters most
This number decides whether a modern terminal can replace yours, so it is the first thing to read.
| Code | Communications |
|---|---|
| 1 | Remote I/O plus RS-232 printer port |
| 5 | RS-232 DH-485 communication port |
| 8 | DH+ plus RS-232 printer port |
| 9 | RS-232 DH-485 plus RS-232 |
| 10 | DeviceNet plus RS-232 printer port |
| 15 | ControlNet plus RS-232 printer port |
| 16 | RS-232 DF1 plus RS-232 printer port |
| 20 | EtherNet plus RS-232 printer port |
So a 2711-T10C8L1 is a 10 inch colour touch terminal on DH+, and a 2711-T6C20L1 is a 6 inch colour touch terminal on Ethernet.
That single digit is the difference between a straightforward modern replacement and a project. See the migration section below.
Power and bezel suffixes
| Suffix | Meaning |
|---|---|
| L1 | 24 V DC power |
| L2 | Stainless steel bezel with AC power |
| L3 | Stainless steel bezel with DC power |
Stainless steel is only available on keypad and keypad-and-touch terminals, not touch only. So 2711-K5A5L2 exists and a touch equivalent does not. That matters in food processing where a stainless bezel was specified.
Note also that touch terminals with L1 support only DC power.

Replacement backlight lamps
A dim or dark screen on an otherwise working terminal is usually the backlight, not the terminal. These are cheap.
| Catalogue number | Fits |
|---|---|
| 2711-NL1 | All PanelView 550 terminals |
| 2711-NL3 | PanelView 600 keypad or keypad and touch |
| 2711-NL2 | PanelView 900 colour |
If your screen has gone dim rather than dead, ask about a lamp before you price a whole terminal.
How to read a 2711P PanelView Plus number
Take 2711P-T7C22D9P.
| Part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 2711P | PanelView Plus family |
| T | Input. T is touch only, B is keypad and touch, K is keypad only |
| 7 | Screen size in inches. 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 15 or 19 |
| C | Display. C is colour, W is widescreen, M is monochrome |
| 22 | Communications. 21 is single Ethernet, 22 is dual Ethernet with DLR |
| D | Power. D is 24 V DC, A is AC |
| 9P | Class. 9P is Performance, 8S is Standard |
On PanelView Plus 6 the class digits are 4 or 5 rather than 8S or 9P, as in 2711P-T7C4D8. A 2711PC prefix is a Plus 6 Compact terminal.
Suffixes
| Suffix | Meaning |

| K | Conformal coated, for example 2711P-T7C22D9PK |
| -B | No Allen-Bradley logo or product identification, for OEMs badging their own machines |
| -BSHK | Stainless steel hygienic, brandless, conformal coated |

PanelView Plus is modular, and that saves money
PanelView Plus terminals are built from a display module and a logic module. On many faults only one has failed. A dead backlight is a display problem. A terminal that will not boot or has lost its application is usually the logic module.
Logic modules are separately available, for example the 2711P-RP1A for PanelView Plus 600. Replacing one is a fraction of the cost of a complete terminal and keeps the existing panel cutout and bezel.
Tell us the symptoms and we will say which module is likely at fault.
Replacing a PanelView Standard: three things to check
The entire 2711 line is discontinued. Moving to a PanelView Plus 7 is a migration, not a drop-in replacement.
1. The communication code
Read the digit off your catalogue number using the table above. If it is 1, 5, 8, 9, 10 or 15 you are on Remote I/O, DH-485, DH+, DeviceNet or ControlNet, and the Plus 7 is Ethernet first. Replacing just the terminal will not work. You need a gateway, a comms change, or a wider migration.
If it is 20 you are already on Ethernet, which makes life considerably easier.
Note also that terminals with DH-485 require applications to be uploaded and downloaded through the communication port, because the RS-232 port on those is for printing only.
2. The panel cutout
Some Plus 7 terminals drop straight into an existing cutout. Some need an adapter kit. And the small PanelView 300 cutout fits no Plus 7 at all, so that one always means cutting the panel or changing the door.
3. The application
PanelView Standard applications were built in PanelBuilder 32. They import into FactoryTalk View Studio for Machine Edition using the Machine Edition Import Wizard, but an import is not a guaranteed clean conversion. Budget engineering time.
Or keep the original running
If a PanelView Standard has failed and the line is stopped, a surplus or tested used terminal of the same catalogue number is far faster and cheaper than a migration. Same cutout, same comms, same application, no engineering.
Migrate on a planned outage when you choose to. We hold and source PanelView Standard, and this is exactly the situation we exist for.
What we can supply
Current production. PanelView Plus 7 Standard and Performance, PanelView 5500, PanelView 800, including coated, brandless and hygienic variants. Quoted with a delivered lead time.
Discontinued. PanelView Standard, PanelView Plus and Plus 6, complete terminals and individual logic and display modules. Surplus and tested used.
Accessories. Backlight lamps, SD cards, mounting hardware, protective overlays and replacement bezels.
We buy PanelView
Old terminals are worth money even from a scrapped machine, and logic and display modules are worth having separately. See Sell To Us.
