Omron CS1 Series PLC and I/O
Omron / CS1 series
Every CS1W unit number, the backplane decode, and the CS1D redundant range that looks similar but is not.
CS1 is Omron's larger rack-based platform, sitting above CJ in capability. It went into process plant, water treatment, larger production lines and anywhere that needed more I/O or redundancy than a CJ rack could give.
It is mature to discontinued depending on the specific unit. Supply is largely surplus and tested used, which is what we do.
The architectural difference from CJ
This is the thing to understand if you know one platform and not the other.
CS1 uses a backplane. CJ does not. A CJ rack is backplane-less, with units clipping together directly. A CS1 system needs a physical backplane that units mount into, and the backplane is a separate catalogue number.
So a CS1 parts list has an item a CJ list never does. If you are quoting a CS1 rack or expanding one, the backplane is not optional and it is not implied by the CPU.
Backplanes decode cleanly
| Prefix | Type |
|---|---|
| CS1W-BC | CPU backplane, takes the CPU unit |
| CS1W-BI | Expansion backplane, I/O only |
The digits give the slot count. A CS1W-BC053 is a 5 slot CPU backplane and a CS1W-BI103 is a 10 slot expansion backplane.
| CPU backplanes | Expansion backplanes | Slots |
|---|---|---|
| CS1W-BC022, CS1W-BC023 | - | 2 |
| CS1W-BC032, CS1W-BC033 | CS1W-BI032, CS1W-BI033 | 3 |
| CS1W-BC052, CS1W-BC053 | CS1W-BI052, CS1W-BI053 | 5 |
| CS1W-BC083 | CS1W-BI082, CS1W-BI083 | 8 |
| CS1W-BC102, CS1W-BC103 | CS1W-BI102, CS1W-BI103 | 10 |
The trailing 2 or 3 is the generation. Send us the full number including it.
CJ1W I/O works on CS1 racks
Useful to know, and it widens your sourcing options considerably.
The two platforms share most of the I/O range, so a CJ1W unit will generally run in a CS1 system. Worth confirming the specific part against the CS1 system manual, since a small number of unit types are CJ-only.
That matters when a CS1W unit is hard to find but the CJ1W equivalent is not. Ask us and we will tell you whether the substitution holds for your part.
Neither works on NJ or NX. The Sysmac generation uses a different EtherCAT-based architecture entirely.
CS1 CPU units
| Model | Family |
|---|---|
| CS1G-CPU42H, CPU43H, CPU44H, CPU45H | CS1G, general purpose, H series |
| CS1G-CPU43-V1, CPU44-V1, CPU45-V1, CPU45-EV1 | CS1G, earlier V1 series |
| CS1H-CPU63H, CPU64H, CPU65H, CPU66H, CPU67H | CS1H, high performance, H series |
| CS1H-CPU64, CPU64-V1, CPU66-V1, CPU67-V1 | CS1H, earlier series |
The H suffix is a different CPU generation, not a variant. A CS1H-CPU67H and a CS1H-CPU67-V1 are not the same part. Read the whole number.
CS1D redundant systems
CS1D is the duplex range, built for process applications that cannot stop. Dual CPUs, dual power supplies, and a duplex unit that manages changeover.
| Model | Description |
|---|---|
| CS1D-CPU65H, CPU67H | Duplex CPU units |
| CS1D-CPU65P, CPU67P | Duplex CPU units |
| CS1D-CPU42S, CPU44S, CPU65S, CPU67S | Single CPU variants |
| CS1D-DPL01 | Duplex unit |
| CS1D-BC082S | CPU backplane |
| CS1D-BI092 | Expansion backplane |
| CS1D-PA207R | Power supply, AC |
| CS1D-PD024 | Power supply, DC |
| CS1D-SP001, SP002 | Space units |
| CS1D-CN051 | Connecting cable |
| CS1D-ETN21D | Ethernet unit for duplex systems |
CS1D parts are not interchangeable with standard CS1. The backplanes, power supplies and CPUs are specific to the redundant architecture. If your number starts CS1D, you need a CS1D replacement.

The CS1W-BAT01 battery is worth acting on before it fails. CS1 CPUs retain the program on a battery. If you have CS1 racks in service and nobody knows when the batteries were last changed, do that while the plant is running.
And the question that follows: do you have a current backup of the program? For a lot of older sites the honest answer is no.
Adding units to an existing rack
Three things to check.
Slot count. The backplane fixes it. Adding a unit to a full backplane means an expansion backplane and an I/O interface unit, not just the module.
Power supply capacity. Each unit draws from the rack supply.
Connecting cables. Expansion racks need the right CS1W-CN cable, and the length is in the number.
Tell us what is already in the rack and we will work out what you actually need.
What we can supply
CS1 and CS1D. CPUs, the full CS1W I/O and process range, backplanes, power supplies, communications units and cables. Surplus and tested used, since official supply has largely ended.
CJ1W equivalents. Where a CS1W unit is unobtainable and the CJ1W part is compatible, we will tell you and quote it.
The process units especially. CS1W-PTS, PDC, PTR and PMV units are expensive, hard to find, and running in New Zealand water treatment and process plant. We look for these specifically.
We buy CS1
If you are decommissioning a CS1 system, every unit has value to the plants still running the platform. Backplanes and process units especially. See Sell To Us.
