SICK Sensors and Safety Parts, New Zealand
RFQ / SICK
Every SICK part has two identifiers. The type code describes it and the 7-digit order number is definitive. Send the order number and there is no ambiguity.
SICK is the sensor and safety brand across New Zealand packaging, meat processing, timber and materials handling. Light curtains, laser scanners, safety switches, encoders and photoelectric sensors.

Send the 7-digit order number
The single most useful habit when ordering SICK.
| Identifier | Example | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| Type code | WL12-3P2431 | Descriptive. Family, housing, output, features |
| Order number | 1041436 | Definitive. Sequential, no embedded meaning |
Two sensors with nearly identical type codes can differ in output polarity, light or dark switching, or connector pinout. Both identifiers are printed on the device.
The numbers in a SICK type code
Across the safety ranges, the digits usually mean something specific.
| Range | Digits | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Light curtains | deTec4 Set 30/900 | Resolution 30 mm, protective field height 900 mm |
| Laser scanners | MICS3-CBAC90EN1 | Protective field range 9.0 m |
| Encoders | DFS60B-S4PA10000 | 10,000 pulses per revolution |
Two halves, and the forklift only hits one
A pattern running through the SICK range that saves real money.
| Product | Separate parts |
|---|---|
| Safety light curtain | Sender and receiver |
| Through-beam photoelectric | WS sender and WE receiver |
| Retro-reflective photoelectric | Sensor and reflector |
| Non-contact safety switch | Switch and actuator |
| Flexi Soft controller | Main module and system plug |
Tell us which half you need. On a curtain the receiver carries the OSSD outputs and the display; the sender is the simpler part.
Where SICK keeps the configuration
Worth checking on any SICK device before ordering a replacement.
| Product | On a replacement |
|---|---|
| Flexi Soft | The system plug carries it. Move the plug and the new module runs |
| microScan3 | Arrives blank. Needs the Safety Designer field sets |
| Programmable encoders | Arrive at default. Need the PGT-10-Pro tool and the correct cable |
| Teach-in photoelectric sensors | Arrive at default. Includes pin assignment on some models |
| Uniquely coded RFID switches | The actuator must be taught in |
Flexi Soft is the good case. One spare main module covers every station on a site, because each station's own plug goes with it.
Ratings across the safety range
Not all safety devices reach the same level, and the technology sets the ceiling.
| Device | Typical rating |
|---|---|
| Safety light curtain | Type 4, PL e, SIL 3 |
| RFID safety switch | PL e, SIL 3 |
| Magnetic safety switch | Up to PL e, with an evaluation unit providing test pulses |
| Safety laser scanner | PL d |
| Inductive position monitoring | PL d |
| LiDAR multibeam for AGVs | Type 2, PL c, SIL 1 |
A scanner is PL d and a curtain is PL e. If the assessment calls for PL e, a scanner does not meet it however well it suits the geometry.
And several of these ratings are conditional. A magnetic switch reaches PL e only with the right evaluation unit; a curtain reaches its rating only when mounted at the calculated distance.
Three things that cause nuisance tripping
Checked before ordering, these save a good proportion of unnecessary replacements.
| Device | Check first |
|---|---|
| Laser scanner | Clean the optical screen. It is a replaceable wear part |
| Retro-reflective sensor | Clean the reflector. The most common cause by a wide margin |
| Muted light curtain | The muting sensors, not the curtain. Alignment drifts |
| Diffuse sensor | Whether the product has changed colour. Dark reflects far less |
| Any device | The teach-in or field set. A replacement at default may not match |
OSSD outputs and standard PLC inputs
Worth knowing because it explains a specific and confusing symptom.
OSSD outputs are pulsed. They test themselves continuously by dropping the output for microseconds.
So an OSSD goes to a safety relay or safety input, not a standard PLC input. A standard input may see the test pulses as real transitions and read intermittently.
If a safety device is wired straight into a standard input and it flickers, the device is fine.
Stainless and washdown versions
Relevant across the range in New Zealand meat and dairy.
| Product | Washdown option |
|---|---|
| Light curtains | Stainless housing. Note the range drops to 4.5 m |
| Encoders | Stainless housing on the DFS60 |
| Safety switches | Magnetic switches for high contamination. TR4 Direct at IP69K |
A standard housing in a caustic washdown will corrode, and the failure looks like a device fault rather than a specification error.

Important: safety replacements
Safety components are certified as part of a machine's safety function, with a rated Type, Category, Performance Level or SIL.
A like-for-like replacement of the same part number preserves the existing assessment. A substitution may not. On light curtains, resolution and protective field height are not interchangeable, because the mounting distance was calculated from them. On safety switches, coding level and locking principle are not interchangeable either.
We will supply the exact part you specify. If you ask for an alternative we will tell you what we believe is equivalent and what differs, but the decision belongs with whoever is responsible for the machine's safety. We are a parts supplier, not your safety engineer.
What we can supply
Current production. deTec4, microScan3, Flexi Soft, RE and STR1 safety switches, the W series sensors and the encoder range, plus cables, brackets, mirror columns, reflectors, actuators and muting accessories. Quoted with a delivered lead time.
Discontinued. C4000, M4000, FGS, MSL, S3000, S300 and earlier SICK safety and sensing. Surplus and tested used, which keeps an existing installation exactly as assessed.
Halves and accessories. Senders, receivers, actuators, reflectors, system plugs, optical screens and programming tools.
We buy SICK
SICK safety devices hold real value, because a like-for-like replacement lets a plant avoid a safety reassessment. A working C4000, FGS or S3000 is worth considerably more than scrap.
Keep pairs together. Senders with receivers, switches with actuators, controllers with system plugs. Matched sets are worth more than orphaned halves. See Sell To Us.
How to give us what we need
The 7-digit order number. Definitive.
The type code as well, if the label is readable.
Which half you need.
What the device connects to. Safety relay, Flexi Soft, safety PLC or standard input.
A photo if the label has faded. The end caps and housings carry both identifiers.
Common questions
Can you get a part that is not listed on your site?
Usually. The site shows what we hold, not what we can source.
Can I use a different light curtain resolution?
Not without recalculating the safety distance. That is a safety assessment question, not a parts question.
Do I need the whole device or just part of it?
Often just part. Senders, receivers, actuators, reflectors, optical screens and system plugs are all separately available.
Do you supply used equipment?
Yes, where new is not available, tested and clearly described.
What is the lead time?
Ex stock items ship the next working day within New Zealand. We give you a firm lead time with the quote.
Do you quote in NZD?
Yes, in NZD including GST for New Zealand customers.
