Omron Safety Relays, Controllers and Light Curtains
Omron / Safety
Safety relays, controllers, safety I/O and light curtains. Plus the ordering detail that is not in the model number.
Omron's safety range runs from simple hard-wired relays through configurable controllers to safety CPUs integrated into Sysmac. Which tier you need depends on how many safety functions the machine has and whether they need reconfiguring without rewiring.
Read the important note at the bottom of this page before ordering a safety replacement.
The power supply voltage is not in the model number
This is the ordering detail that catches people on G9SA, and it is unusual.
Omron states: specify the power supply voltage when ordering. A G9SA-301 is not a complete specification on its own. The voltage is a separate selection, commonly written as G9SA-301 AC/DC24.
So if you send us just the number off the relay, also tell us the coil voltage, or send a photo of the label. Otherwise we cannot quote it accurately.
The three tiers
| Tier | Range | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Hard-wired relays | G9SA, G9SA-P, G9SR, G9SX | Simple, fixed safety functions |
| Configurable controllers | G9SP, NE1A | More zones than relay logic handles sensibly |
| Integrated safety CPU | NX-SL with NX-SI and NX-SO I/O | Standard and safety logic in one Sysmac Studio project |
A common upgrade path is a plant running standalone G9SA relays on an older CJ1 line adding a G9SP when it outgrows hard-wired logic.
G9SA safety relay units
| Model | Description |
|---|---|
| G9SA-301 | 3PST-NO, Category 4, 5 A, SPST-NC auxiliary, 1 or 2 channel input |
| G9SA-321 | With OFF-delay outputs |
| G9SA-321-T075 | OFF-delay, 0.5 to 7.5 second range |
| G9SA-321-T15 | OFF-delay, 1 to 15 second range |
| G9SA-321-T30 | OFF-delay, 2 to 30 second range |
| G9SA-501 | Five pole |
| G9SA-TH301 | Variant |
| G9SA-EX series | Expansion units |
| G9SA-P series | Negative common, NPN version |
The OFF-delay ranges
Each has fifteen settable steps.
| Suffix | Steps |
|---|---|
| T075 | 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5 seconds |
| T15 | 1 through 15 seconds in 1 second steps |
| T30 | 2, 4, 6 through 30 seconds in 2 second steps |
Units are set to maximum at the factory. A new relay will not arrive matching your machine's setting, so it needs configuring before commissioning.
The ranges overlap but are not interchangeable. If your application needs 5 seconds, a T075 gives it exactly, a T15 gives it exactly, and a T30 does not offer 5 at all. Check the required delay against the available steps.
Which relays take an expansion unit
Omron specifies the expansion unit connects to a G9SA-301, G9SA-501, G9SA-321 or G9SA-TH301.
If you are adding contacts to an existing installation, check your base relay is on that list.
A wiring note on the G9SA-P
From the Omron datasheet, worth knowing before commissioning: when using T23, make sure T21 and T22 are open. For 1-channel input, make sure T12 and T23 are shorted.
G9SR and G9SX
| Model | Description |
|---|---|
| G9SR-BC201-RC | Safety relay unit |
| G9SR-AD201-RC | Safety relay unit |
| G9SR-EX031-T90-RC | Expansion unit with OFF-delay |
| G9SX-NS | Dedicated controller, used with certain safety switches |
G9SP programmable safety controllers
| Model |
|---|
| G9SP-N10S |
| G9SP-N10D |
| G9SP-N20S |
These are standalone programmable safety controllers. The three models differ in local safety I/O capacity, so match the model to your input and output count rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
NE1A safety network controllers
| Model | Description |
|---|---|
| NE1A-SCPU01-V1 | Safety network controller |
| NE1A-SCPU02 | Safety network controller |
DST1 remote safety I/O
| Model | Type |
|---|---|
| DST1-ID12SL-1 | Safety input |
| DST1-MD16SL-1 | Mixed safety I/O |
| DST1-MRD08SL-1 | Mixed safety I/O with relay |
| DST1-XD0808SL-1 | Safety I/O |
NX safety, integrated with Sysmac
| Model | Type |
|---|---|
| NX-SL3300 | Safety CPU |
| NX-SL3500 | Safety CPU |
| NX-SL5500 | Safety CPU |
| NX-SIH400 | Safety input unit |
| NX-SID800 | Safety input unit |
| NX-SOH200 | Safety output unit |
| NX-SOD200 | Safety output unit |
| NX-SOD400 | Safety output unit |
Two NX safety rules
Safety units connect through the EtherCAT Coupler, not the CPU. Omron is explicit that Safety CPU, Safety Input and Safety Output units connect to an NX1P2 CPU via the EtherCAT Coupler Unit. The coupler is part of the architecture, not an option.
An NX-SL replacement must match the project configuration. The safety network configuration is stored in the Sysmac Studio project, so the replacement has to match not just the model but that configuration. It is not a straight swap in the way a hard-wired relay is.
See Sysmac NJ and NX for the controllers these units run under.
Light curtains
| Range | Notes |
|---|---|
| F3SG-4RA | Advanced, general purpose applications |
| F3SG-4RE | Simplified applications |
| MS4800 series | Industrial grade, rugged and dirty environments |
Light curtains are ordered by protective height and resolution as well as model family. Tell us the guarded opening dimensions and what you are detecting, and we will specify it.
F3S-TGR magnetic non-contact safety switches
Useful specifications from the Omron datasheet, because these get replaced on gap issues rather than failure.
| Specification | Value |
|---|---|
| Operating distance, OFF to ON | 10 mm, or 8 mm on NBPR and NBMR |
| Operating distance, ON to OFF | 20 mm, or 12 mm on NBPR and NBMR |
| Recommended setting gap | 5 mm |
| Actuator approach speed | 4 mm/s minimum, 1000 mm/s maximum |
| Switching frequency | 1 Hz maximum |
| Operating temperature, plastic housing | Minus 25 to plus 80 degrees C |
| Operating temperature, stainless housing | Minus 25 to plus 105 degrees C |
The recommended 5 mm gap is the number to check. If a door switch is nuisance-tripping, the gap has often drifted as the door has sagged or the frame has moved. That is cheaper to fix than replacing the switch.
Note also the maximum approach speed of 1000 mm/s. A fast-moving guard can outrun the switch.
Stainless steel housings are available for wash-down and higher temperature areas, and are worth specifying in food processing.
Important: safety replacements
Safety components are certified as part of a machine's safety function, with a rated Category or Performance Level.
A like-for-like replacement of the same model number preserves that assessment. A substitution may not. A relay with a different contact configuration, a different OFF-delay range, or different input channels can change the achieved Performance Level even if it physically fits and appears to work.
Our position is simple. We will supply the exact model you specify. If you ask us to suggest an alternative we will tell you what we think is equivalent and what differs, but the decision on whether a substitution is valid for your safety function belongs to whoever is responsible for the machine's safety assessment. We are a parts supplier, not your safety engineer.
If the original is genuinely unobtainable, tell us and we will help you find it rather than pushing you toward a substitute.
What we can supply
Current production. G9SA, G9SP, NX-SL safety CPUs and NX safety I/O, F3SG light curtains and F3S switches. Quoted with a delivered lead time.
Earlier and discontinued. NE1A controllers, DST1 remote safety I/O, older G9S relays and MS4800 curtains. Surplus and tested used.
The NE1A and DST1 side matters. A lot of New Zealand machinery from the 2000s runs those, and when one fails the choice is a used original or a safety reassessment.
We buy Omron safety
If you are decommissioning a machine, the safety relays, controllers and switches are worth money to plants running the same generation. See Sell To Us.

Send us your model numbers
Send the full number and the power supply voltage, since that is not in the G9SA model number. On OFF-delay units include the T suffix. If you are replacing a discontinued unit, tell us the contact configuration and input channels so we can say what is genuinely equivalent. Quotes in NZD including GST.
