Schneider Modicon Momentum
Schneider / Modicon Momentum
The same I/O base is either distributed I/O or a complete PLC, depending on what you clip onto the top of it. Nothing in the base part number tells you which.
Modicon Momentum, also branded TSX Momentum, is the Schneider distributed I/O and compact PLC platform. Discontinued, and still widely installed across New Zealand plant.
A Momentum node is built from separate parts
Understanding this decides what you order, and it is why Momentum quotes go wrong.
| Layer | What it does | Prefix |
|---|---|---|
| I/O base | Carries the field wiring and the I/O circuitry | 170A, 171C |
| Adapter | Either a communication adapter or a processor adapter | 170ENT, 170FNT, 170INT, 170DNT, 170PNT, or an M1 or M1E processor |
| Option adapter | Optional third layer between processor and base | 172P |
Schneider describes the base as having an internal interface connector for the communication module or processor module. One or the other.
The same base does two completely different jobs
| Base plus | You have |
|---|---|
| A communication adapter | Distributed I/O, reporting to a PLC elsewhere |
| A processor adapter | A standalone PLC with its own program |
A 170ADM35010 on its own is neither. It is an I/O base waiting for a top half.
So when a Momentum node fails, the first job is working out which layer failed. The answer changes the price by an order of magnitude and it changes whether you have to disturb the field wiring.
Which half failed?
Worth thinking through before ordering.
| Failed part | What replacing it involves |
|---|---|
| Adapter | Unclip and swap. Field wiring untouched. The network address may need setting |
| I/O base | Rewiring. Every field connection comes off and goes back on |
The adapter is the electronics and the base is the wiring. Adapters carry the network interface and the processing; bases are largely passive.
So an adapter failure is a short job. Tell us which one you need and we will not quote the pair.
The communication adapters, by network
The adapter is chosen by the network the node sits on, and they are not interchangeable.
| Reference | Network |
|---|---|
| 170ENT11001 | Ethernet TCP/IP, 10/100 Mbit/s |
| 170ENT110 series, earlier | Ethernet, 10 Mbit/s only |
| 170FNT11001 | FIPIO |
| 170INT11000, 170INT11003 | Interbus, twisted pair |
| 170DNT11000 | PROFIBUS DP |
| 170PNT11020 | Modbus Plus |
| 170PNT16020 | Modbus Plus, redundant port |
Note the two Ethernet generations. The 170ENT11001 runs 10/100 Mbit/s where earlier adapters were 10 Mbit/s only. On a modern network the older one may negotiate badly or not at all.
And the redundant Modbus Plus adapter is a different part. A 170PNT16020 has a second port for a redundant network; a 170PNT11020 does not. If your plant runs redundant Modbus Plus, the standard adapter halves your resilience without any obvious symptom.
Processor adapters, M1 and M1E
| Type | Notes |
|---|---|
| M1 | Processor adapter, Modbus and I/O bus variants |
| M1E | As M1 with Ethernet |
| 171CBU98090 | Unity M1E processor |
| 171CCC96030 | Integrated CPU with 12 fast 24 V DC inputs and digital outputs on board |
Published processor adapter specifications
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Clock speed | 20 MHz or 32 MHz depending on variant |
| Discrete I/O capacity | 2048 inputs and 2048 outputs |
| Higher capacity variants | Up to 8192 discrete bits |
| Ports | Modbus, RS-232/485, Ethernet, USB and I/O bus, depending on variant |
| Memory | Flash and RAM |
| Operating temperature | 0 to 60 degrees C, non-condensing |
The port combination is the thing to match. Variants exist with one Modbus, two Modbus, one Modbus plus one I/O bus, and Ethernet combinations. A processor adapter with the wrong ports is not a replacement however similar the specification looks.
The Unity M1E processors such as the 171CBU98090 run Unity Pro, where the earlier M1 adapters use Concept or ProWORX. Same software generation question as the rest of the Modicon range.
The option adapter, and where the battery lives
A third layer that sits between the processor adapter and the base.
| Reference | Function |
|---|---|
| 172PNN21022 | Option adapter with one Modbus Plus port on board |
| Serial link option adapter | Single |
| Modbus Plus option adapter | Redundant |
Schneider's assembly sequence is: assemble the M1 processor adapter and the option adapter together, then mount the assembled pair onto the I/O base.
The battery is in the option adapter
Worth knowing, because it is not where you would look.
Schneider's manual covers installing batteries in a Momentum option adapter, not in the processor.
So a node without an option adapter has no battery backup. And if a Momentum PLC is losing its retained data, the option adapter is where to look rather than the CPU.
Some bases ship without terminal blocks
A straightforward ordering trap that appears in the catalogue descriptions.
Several Momentum bases are listed explicitly as without terminal block, including the 170ADM39030 and the 170ANR12090.
The terminal block is a separate part on those. Order the base alone and you have nothing to land the field wiring on.
If you are replacing a base, the existing terminal block may be reusable. Tell us and we will check whether you need one.
What is on an I/O base
From the Schneider description of the 170ADM35010:
- Internal interface connector for the communication or processor module
- Locking and ground contact for that module
- Slot for the power strip
- Two screw holes for panel mounting
- Protective cover
- Grounding screw for the front panel
Bases fit compact standard housings and mount on DIN rail or on a panel.
Note the power strip is its own component. Another small part that can be missing from a used base.

Conformal coated versions exist across the range
Schneider produced conformal coating variants of most Momentum parts, including the Ethernet, FIPIO and Interbus communication adapters and the M1 and M1E processor adapters.
Standard and coated versions are different part numbers and look identical.
Relevant in New Zealand for coastal sites, wastewater and any plant with corrosive atmosphere. If the existing part is a coated version, the standard one is not a like-for-like replacement, and it will fail years earlier without anyone connecting the two events.
Same principle as the ABB XC modules and the M340 H versions covered elsewhere on this site.

What we can supply
I/O bases. Discrete, analogue and mixed, across the 170A and 171C ranges.
Communication adapters. Ethernet, FIPIO, Interbus, PROFIBUS DP and Modbus Plus, including redundant versions.
Processor adapters. M1 and M1E in both Concept and Unity generations.
Option adapters, terminal blocks and power strips. The small parts that stop a job.
Momentum is long discontinued, so this is new old stock, surplus and tested used.
Momentum is worth holding spares for
A specific argument for this platform.
Because the adapter and the base separate, a spare adapter covers every node using that network. One 170ENT11001 on the shelf protects every Ethernet Momentum drop on the site, whatever I/O base each one carries.
That is an unusually cheap insurance policy for a distributed system, and it is the single most useful thing to know about maintaining Momentum.
We buy Modicon Momentum
Momentum holds value, and the adapters in particular are worth real money to plants still running the platform. If you are migrating, keep the adapters separate from the bases, because they sell separately. See Sell To Us.
