Schneider Magelis and Harmony HMI
Schneider / Magelis and Harmony HMI
The current Magelis Easy GXU uses the same panel cutout as the obsolete XBTGT range. So replacing a twenty year old terminal can mean no panel work at all.
Magelis, now also branded Harmony, is the Schneider operator terminal range. From 3.4 inch text displays to industrial PCs.
The GXU drops into an XBTGT cutout
The most commercially useful fact in this range, and Schneider states it directly.
The Magelis Easy GXU has the same cut-out as the Magelis XBTGT range.
XBTGT is long obsolete and there is a lot of it in New Zealand. Normally replacing an obsolete HMI means a new cutout, which on a stainless machine panel is a serious job.
Here it does not. The panel stays as it is.
Two caveats worth stating. The application still has to be migrated, since the software generation differs. And you should confirm the specific sizes match before cutting anyone loose on a promise.
Tell us the XBTGT reference and we will confirm the GXU equivalent and the cutout.
Magelis and Harmony are the same products
Both names are in circulation and it causes needless doubt.
| Older name | Current name |
|---|---|
| Magelis GTU | Harmony GTU |
| Magelis iPC | Harmony iPC |
| Magelis, generally | Harmony HMI |
Part numbers are unchanged. Schneider has been consolidating everything under the Harmony name, the same way TeSys D became TeSys Deca and Preventa became Harmony XPS.
If a drawing says Magelis and a current catalogue says Harmony, that is a rename.
The ranges
| Range | Prefix | Positioning |
|---|---|---|
| STO | HMISTO | Entry. 3.4 inch, 200 x 80 pixels, three colour versions |
| STU | HMISTU | 3.5 inch TFT QVGA colour, Ethernet |
| GXU | HMIGXU | Basic, aluminium front panel, XBTGT cutout |
| GTO | HMIGTO | Mid range across several sizes |
| GTU | HMIDT, HMIG | Modular smart display range |
| XBT GC | XBTGC | Compact HMI and controller in one unit, with expandable I/O |
| XBTGT | XBTGT | Previous generation, obsolete |
| XBTR, XBTF, XBTG, XBTL | Earlier generations | |
| iPC | HMIPC, HMIBM | Industrial PCs, box and panel |
The XBT GC is a PLC as well as an HMI
Worth flagging because it changes what a replacement has to do.
The Magelis XBT GC is a compact HMI and controller in a single unit, with expandable I/O.
So if a machine has an XBT GC and no separate PLC, the terminal is running the logic. Replacing it with a display-only HMI leaves the machine with nothing controlling it.
Check whether there is a PLC in the panel before quoting a straight HMI.
Confirmed specifications
HMIDT542, Harmony GTU display
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Display | 10.4 inch LCD colour TFT |
| Resolution | 800 x 600, SVGA |
| Ports | USB 2.0 |
| Brightness | Adjustable 0 to 100 |
| Operating temperature | 0 to 60 degrees C |
Magelis STO and STU
| Item | STO | STU |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 3.4 inch, 200 x 80 pixels | 3.5 inch TFT QVGA colour |
| Colour | Three colour versions | Full colour |
| Ethernet | RJ45 10/100 Base T | |
| Mounting | Tool-free spring clips | Push button system |
The STU has Ethernet and the STO does not. Half an inch apart in screen size and a fundamental difference in how the terminal connects.
Magelis Easy GXU
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Front panel | Aluminium |
| Supply | 24 V DC |
| Serial | RJ45, RS485 and RS232 multiprotocol |
| USB | Mini-USB port |
| Operating temperature | Up to 55 degrees C |
| Cutout | Same as Magelis XBTGT |
| Certifications | Worldwide, including hazardous locations and marine |
| Protection options | Covers available against chemical and oil substances |
The multiprotocol serial port is genuinely useful on an older machine. One RJ45 handling both RS485 and RS232 means the terminal can talk to a range of legacy PLCs without an adapter.
And the protective covers are worth knowing about. On a machine where the operator has oily hands, or in a plant with chemical exposure, a cover extends the life of the touchscreen considerably. It is a separate part.
Three software tools, and all three were renamed
This is where Schneider HMI gets confusing, because the tool names have all changed.
| Current name | Formerly | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Vijeo Designer | Unchanged | Classic configuration for the complete HMI range |
| EcoStruxure Operator Terminal Expert | Vijeo XD | Newer terminals. Gesture and UI design |
| EcoStruxure Machine SCADA Expert | Vijeo XL | Harmony iPC. Data-intensive visualisation, SCADA, OEE |
Vijeo Designer remains the tool for the classic range. If your terminals are GTO, STU, STO or XBTGT, that is almost certainly what the project files are in.
The software version matters
Schneider notes that the GTO documentation is valid for Vijeo Designer 6.2 or higher.
So a terminal may need a minimum software version. An older Vijeo Designer installation may not support a newer terminal, and that is a licence and install problem rather than a hardware one.
If you are replacing a terminal with a later model, check what version the site runs before ordering.
PV, RL and SV are on the unit
Useful when identifying an existing terminal.
Schneider states you can identify the product version (PV), revision level (RL) and software version (SV) from the unit label.
Send all three when asking about a replacement. As with the Quantum PV numbers on our Quantum page, these determine what a unit is capable of and whether a firmware path exists.
A replacement arrives blank
The standing warning for every configurable device on this site, and it applies here.
A new or used Magelis arrives without your application. The screens, tag database, alarms and recipes all live in the Vijeo Designer project.
If you run Magelis terminals, confirm the project files are backed up and that someone has a working installation of the right software version.
On an older XBTGT running an old Vijeo Designer, that is worth checking before you need it rather than after.
Terminals are repairable at component level
Worth knowing before replacing a whole unit.
The parts that fail on an operator terminal are mechanical and consumable:
| Part | Typical failure |
|---|---|
| Touchscreen glass | Cracked, or touch layer worn from high cycle use |
| Protective film | Scratched or clouded |
| Membrane keypad | Worn through on the frequently used keys |
| LCD display | Backlight failure, dimming |
A cracked screen or a dead backlight does not always mean a new terminal. Same argument as the ABB FlexPendant on our robotics page.
Tell us what has actually failed and we will look at the component before the assembly.
And fit a protective film to a new terminal. It is cheap, and it is the difference between replacing a film in three years and replacing a screen.
Certifications
| Standard | Notes |
|---|---|
| ATEX | Certification by Technical Inspection Association. Refer to the product label |
| Merchant Navy | Products designed to comply with Merchant Navy rules |
| Hazardous locations | Refer to product markings |
Certification is marked on the product, and Schneider directs you to the label rather than the catalogue. If a terminal is in a hazardous area or on a vessel, match the certification, not just the model.
What to send us
The full part number.
The PV, RL and SV off the label.
Which software the site uses, and what version.
Whether the terminal also runs the machine logic, as an XBT GC does.
What has actually failed, since screens and films are separately available.
Whether certification matters for the location.
What we can supply
Current production. STO, STU, GXU, GTO, GTU and Harmony iPC ranges, plus protective films, covers and mounting accessories. Quoted with a delivered lead time.
Obsolete. XBTGT, XBTG, XBTF, XBTR and earlier Magelis terminals. Surplus and tested used, which keeps an existing application running unchanged.
Repair parts. Touchscreens, films, membrane keypads and LCD displays.
Replace or migrate?
Both are legitimate and they cost very differently.
| Option | What it involves |
|---|---|
| Used like-for-like | Same model, existing project loads unchanged. Running the same day |
| XBTGT to GXU | No panel work, application migrated in software |
| Full migration | New terminal, new cutout, application rebuilt |
The middle option is the one people do not know exists, and on an XBTGT it is often the right answer.
We buy Magelis
Obsolete Magelis terminals hold real value to plants still running them, and a working XBTGT is worth considerably more than scrap. See Sell To Us.
