Omron HMI and Programmable Terminals
Omron / HMI and programmable terminals
Every NS, NB and NA model number, the size decode, and the power supply trap when migrating NS to NB.
Omron has made operator terminals across several generations. NS is the workhorse that went into a lot of New Zealand machinery, NB is the compact current range, and NA is the Sysmac-integrated line.
NS is mature and increasingly hard to find new. That is where we come in.
The size is in the number
Unusually straightforward. The digits after NS give the display diagonal.
| Model | Display |
|---|---|
| NS5 | 5.7 inch |
| NS8 | 8.4 inch |
| NS10 | 10.4 inch |
| NS12 | 12.1 inch |
| NS15 | 15.0 inch |
The suffix is where it gets serious
The characters after the size are not cosmetic. The suffix governs backlight technology, colour depth and communications.
| Suffix element | What it controls |
|---|---|
| First letter | Display technology and colour depth |
| Backlight | CCFL or LED |
| Colour depth | Monochrome, 4,096 colours, or 32,768 colours |
| Trailing digits | Communications, including Ethernet or DeviceNet slave |
| B | Bezel colour variant |
| -V1, -V2 | Hardware generation |
Confirm the exact suffix rather than matching on size. Two NS10 terminals with different suffixes can differ in backlight, colour depth and whether they have an Ethernet port. Send us the full number.
NS5 terminals
| Model | Bezel variant |
|---|---|
| NS5-MQ10-V2 | NS5-MQ10B-V2 |
| NS5-MQ11-V2 | NS5-MQ11B-V2 |

NS8, NS10, NS12 and NS15 terminals
| Size | Models |
|---|---|
| NS8 | NS8-TV00-V2, TV00B-V2, TV01-V2, TV01B-V2 |
| NS10 | NS10-TV00-V2, TV00B-V2, TV01-V2, TV01B-V2 |
| NS12 | NS12-TS00-V2, TS00B-V2, TS01-V2, TS01B-V2 |
| NS15 | NS15-TX01S-V2, TX01B-V2 |
Handheld and runtime
| Model | Description |
|---|---|
| NSH5-SQR10B-V2 | Handheld terminal |
| NSH5-SQG10B-V2 | Handheld terminal |
| NS-NSRCL1 | NS-Runtime, 1 licence |
| NS-NSRCL3 | NS-Runtime, 3 licences |
| NS-NSRCL10 | NS-Runtime, 10 licences |
| NSJW-ETN21 | Ethernet unit for NSJ |
NS-Runtime needs a hardware key. Omron states a USB dongle is required to run it. If you have inherited an NS-Runtime installation without the dongle, it will not run.
Also note NS-Runtime version 1.30 and later dropped support for Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Vista.
NB terminals
| Model | Notes |
|---|---|
| NB3Q-TW00B | 3.5 inch |
| NB3Q-TW01B | 3.5 inch, with Ethernet |
| NB5Q-TW00B | 5.6 inch |
| NB5Q-TW01B | 5.6 inch, with Ethernet |
| NB7W-TW00B | 7 inch |
| NB7W-TW01B | 7 inch, with Ethernet |
| NB7W-TX01B | 7 inch variant |
| NB10W-TW01B | 10.1 inch, with Ethernet |
The 00 versus 01 is the Ethernet port. An NB7W-TW00B has no Ethernet and an NB7W-TW01B does.
NB accessories
| Model | Item |
|---|---|
| NB3Q-KBA04 | Protective cover, 3.5 inch |
| NB5Q-KBA04 | Protective cover, 5.6 inch |
| NB7W-KBA04 | Protective cover, 7 inch |
| NB10W-KBA04 | Protective cover, 10.1 inch |
| NB5Q-ATT01 | Mounting attachment |
| NB-RSEXT-2M | Extension cable, 2 m |
NA terminals, Sysmac integrated
| Size | Models |
|---|---|
| 7 inch | NA5-7W001B-V1, NA5-7W001S-V1 |
| 9 inch | NA5-9W001B-V1, NA5-9W001S-V1 |
| 12 inch | NA5-12W101B-V1, NA5-12W101S-V1 |
| 15 inch | NA5-15W101B-V1, NA5-15W101S-V1 |
NA accessories
| Attachment | Protective cover | Size |
|---|---|---|
| NA-7WATW01 | NA-7WKBA04 | 7 inch |
| NA-9WATW01 | NA-9WKBA04 | 9 inch |
| NA-12WATW01 | NA-12WKBA04 | 12 inch |
| NA-15WATW01 | NA-15WKBA04 | 15 inch |
Note the accessory numbers follow the display size, so a 12 inch cover is NA-12WKBA04 to match the terminal.
Migrating NS to NB: check the power supply
The trap that catches people, and it is nothing to do with the software.
An NB10W draws roughly 0.85 A at 24 V DC. An NS10 draws about 0.45 A. That is nearly double.
If you drop a new NB into a panel where the 24 V supply was sized for the old NS, it may run fine warm and fail to start on a cold morning when inrush is highest. Check the supply headroom before you commit.
Size matching
| Old | Closest NB match |
|---|---|
| NS5-V1 | NB5W |
| NS10-V1 | NB10W |
The data types change too
Worth knowing before someone starts the conversion.
NB, NA and NY use UTF-16 strings and signed 32-bit integers internally. NS used packed BCD in places, particularly in older data areas of a CJ or CS PLC.
So addresses need re-mapping rather than straight importing. The NB import wizard handles the project file, but the address cross-reference view is where the real work is.
For NA targets, a manual rebuild is often faster than fighting an automated converter.
And re-check your logging
NB series logs go to USB sticks, and on Ethernet models to FTP or SMB shares. Behaviour is comparable to NS-V1 but worth validating rather than assuming.
Two notes on older NS terminals
Image memory increased in 2008. Omron increased NS image memory to 60 MB as of July 2008. An older unit has less. If a project will not load onto a replacement, that may be why.
Some features depend on lot number, not model number. Omron specifies minimum lot numbers for certain functions: NS5 colour models from lot 15Z0, NS8 from 28X1, NS10 from 11Y1, NS12 from 14Z1 and NS15 from 31114K.
That is on the label, not in the catalogue number. If you need a specific function on a used terminal, tell us and we will check the lot.
Legacy terminals
We also handle the older ranges: NT31, NT30, NT20S, NT10S and the NSJ series. Parts such as NT31C-KBA05N and NT30-KBA01 turn up as enquiries regularly.
Note the NT30-KBA01 chemical-resistant cover is specified for the NS5 only.
What we can supply
Current production. NB and NA terminals, covers, attachments and cables. Quoted with a delivered lead time.
Mature and legacy. The full NS range, NSH handhelds, NSJ, and the older NT terminals. Surplus and tested used.
Accessories. Protective covers, mounting attachments, extension cables and replacement film.
Can you identify my terminal from a photo?
Yes. Terminal labels are on the back and often faded. Send a photo of the rear label and the front of the unit.
If the label is gone, tell us the screen size, whether it is colour or monochrome, what it connects to and roughly how old the machine is.
We buy Omron terminals
If you are replacing a control system, the old terminals have value even when the machine is scrap. See Sell To Us.
