ABB ACS355, ACS350 and ACS310 Machinery Drives
ABB / ACS355, ACS350 and ACS310 machinery drives
Full rating tables with frame sizes and fuses, ABB's own ACS355 to ACS380 replacement mapping, and the reason an IP66 drive may not fit where the IP20 one did.
ACS355 and its predecessor ACS350 are the ABB machinery drives, 0.37 to 22 kW. ACS310 is the pump and fan variant. All three are widely installed in New Zealand and all three are the sort of thing that fails on a Friday.
On these drives the code is the exact current
Unlike the ACS550, where the code is rounded, the ACS355 current code matches the nominal current exactly.
| Code | Nominal current I2N |
|---|---|
| 01A2 | 1.2 A |
| 03A3 | 3.3 A |
| 12A5 | 12.5 A |
| 23A1 | 23.1 A |
| 44A0 | 44.0 A |
Handy, but do not carry the assumption across families. On the ACS550 a 012A is 11.9 A.
Complete ACS355 range, 380 to 480 V three-phase
From the ABB ACS355 catalogue. PN in kW is typical motor power at 400 V in normal use; PN in hp is at 460 V.
| Type code | kW | hp | I2N | Frame, IP20 | Frame, IP66 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ACS355-03X-01A2-4 | 0.37 | 0.5 | 1.2 A | R0 | R1 |
| ACS355-03X-01A9-4 | 0.55 | 0.75 | 1.9 A | R0 | R1 |
| ACS355-03X-02A4-4 | 0.75 | 1.0 | 2.4 A | R1 | R1 |
| ACS355-03X-03A3-4 | 1.1 | 1.5 | 3.3 A | R1 | R1 |
| ACS355-03X-04A1-4 | 1.5 | 2.0 | 4.1 A | R1 | R1 |
| ACS355-03X-05A6-4 | 2.2 | 3.0 | 5.6 A | R1 | R1 |
| ACS355-03X-07A3-4 | 3.0 | 4.0 | 7.3 A | R1 | R1 |
| ACS355-03X-08A8-4 | 4.0 | 5.0 | 8.8 A | R1 | R1 |
| ACS355-03X-12A5-4 | 5.5 | 7.5 | 12.5 A | R3 | R3 |
| ACS355-03X-15A6-4 | 7.5 | 10.0 | 15.6 A | R3 | R3 |
| ACS355-03X-23A1-4 | 11.0 | 15.0 | 23.1 A | R3 | None |
| ACS355-03X-31A0-4 | 15.0 | 20.0 | 31.0 A | R4 | None |
| ACS355-03X-38A0-4 | 18.5 | 25.0 | 38.0 A | R4 | None |
| ACS355-03X-44A0-4 | 22.0 | 30.0 | 44.0 A | R4 | None |
ABB states that X within the type designation stands for E or U. E is the European variant and U the US. New Zealand normally takes the E.
Two things in that table worth acting on
The IP66 version of the two smallest drives is a bigger frame. An ACS355-03E-01A2-4 is an R0 in IP20 and an R1 in IP66. If you are upgrading an existing drive to a washdown enclosure, check the space before ordering.
IP66 stops at 15.6 A. The 23A1, 31A0, 38A0 and 44A0 have no IP66 option at all. Above 7.5 kW a washdown application needs the drive in a separate enclosure.
That is worth knowing early in a food plant project rather than after the drive is specified.
Fuse ratings
From the ABB catalogue, for the 380 to 480 V range.
| Drive | gG fuse | UL class T |
|---|---|---|
| 01A2-4, 01A9-4, 02A4-4, 03A3-4 | 10 A | 10 A |
| 04A1-4, 05A6-4 | 16 A | 15 A |
| 07A3-4 | 16 A | 20 A |
| 08A8-4 | 20 A | 25 A |
| 12A5-4 | 25 A | 30 A |
| 15A6-4 | 35 A | 35 A |
| 23A1-4 | 50 A | 50 A |
| 31A0-4 | 80 A | 80 A |
At 200 to 240 V the 31A0-2 takes 80 A gG and the 46A2-2 takes 100 A gG.
Note the gG and UL figures are not always the same. On the 07A3-4 it is 16 A gG against 20 A UL class T. Use the one that matches your standard.
ACS350 uses the same current codes
Genuinely useful when sourcing a replacement for the older drive.
| ACS350 | ACS355 | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| ACS350-03X-01A2-4 | ACS355-03X-01A2-4 | 0.37 kW |
| ACS350-03X-08A8-4 | ACS355-03X-08A8-4 | 4.0 kW |
| ACS350-03X-23A1-4 | ACS355-03X-23A1-4 | 11.0 kW |
| ACS350-03X-44A0-4 | ACS355-03X-44A0-4 | 22.0 kW |
The current codes, kW ratings and frame sizes match across the two ranges. So identifying the equivalent is straightforward, and the ACS355 is the natural successor to a failed ACS350.
Check the physical fit and the parameter set rather than assuming a pure drop-in, but the sizing work is already done for you.
ABB's own ACS355 to ACS380 mapping
From the ABB ACS355 to ACS380 transition guide. Note the current codes do not carry across.
| ACS355 | ACS380 replacement |
|---|---|
| ACS355-03U-03A3-4 | ACS380-040x-04A0-4 |
| ACS355-03U-04A1-4 | ACS380-040x-05A6-4 |
| ACS355-03U-05A6-4 | ACS380-040x-09A4-4 |
| ACS355-03U-08A8-4 | ACS380-040x-12A6-4 |
| ACS355-03U-12A5-4 | ACS380-040x-17A0-4 |
| ACS355-03U-15A6-4 | ACS380-040x-17A0-4 |
| ACS355-03U-23A1-4 | ACS380-040x-032A-4 |
| ACS355-03U-31A0-4 | ACS380-040x-038A-4 |
| ACS355-03U-38A0-4 | ACS380-040x-045A-4 |
| ACS355-03U-44A0-4 | ACS380-040x-050A-4 |
An ACS355-03U-03A3-4 becomes an ACS380-040x-04A0-4. Different number, same job. Anyone matching by current code across the two families will order the wrong size.
Two more points from the mapping:
The 12A5 and the 15A6 both map to the same ACS380. The 17A0-4 covers both, so two ACS355 ratings consolidate into one ACS380.
Some replacements move up a frame size. The transition guide shows an 08A8-4 at R2 replaced by a 12A6-4 at R3. Check the panel space before committing to a migration.
ACS310 pump and fan drives
Same physical family, optimised for pumps and fans. Type codes follow the same pattern, for example ACS310-03E-09A7-4.
Frame sizes run R0 to R4.
Mounting
| Method | Frames | Fixings |
|---|---|---|
| Back mounting | R0 to R4 | Four holes |
| Side mounting | R0 to R2 only | Three holes |
Drives install with screws or on DIN rail.
Clearances, and a useful one
ABB specifies 75 mm free space above and below the drive for cooling.
No free space is required at the sides. Drives can be mounted immediately next to each other.
That is worth knowing when laying out a panel with several drives. Plenty of people leave side gaps that are not needed and then run out of width.
NEMA 1 needs an option kit
The standard ACS310 is IP20. To comply with NEMA 1 you need the MUL1-R1, MUL1-R3 or MUL1-R4 option kit, matched to the frame size.
These are separate parts. If you are supplying into an application requiring NEMA 1, order the kit with the drive.
The control panel that orders separately
A specific catch from the ABB manual: unlike the other panels, the ACS-CP-D is ordered with a separate material code.
So if your application uses that panel, it will not come as a standard option selection. Tell us and we will quote it as its own line.
Firmware
The current ACS310 manual applies to firmware version 4.050 or later, readable at parameter 3301.
If you are working from an older manual and the parameter numbers do not match, the firmware version is the first thing to check.
Reading the option codes
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| +B063 | IP66, IP67 and UL Type 4X enclosure |
| +J404 | Panel option |
| 03E, 03U | Three-phase, European or US variant |
| 01E, 01U | Single-phase variants |
Option codes are appended after the type designation separated by plus signs, and you can stack several. Send the whole designation.
What usually fails
Cooling fans. The most common fault across every drive family and a fraction of the drive cost.
Control panels. Separate parts. The ACS-CP-A, ACS-CP-C and ACS-CP-D are all orderable on their own.
Fieldbus adapter modules. Frequently missing from a used drive. If the drive talks to a PLC, check the replacement has the same adapter.
Before condemning a drive, check the fan.
What we can supply
Current production. ACS355 and ACS310 across the full range, plus ACS380 where a migration is planned. Option kits, panels, fans and adapters. Quoted with a delivered lead time.
Discontinued. ACS350 and earlier machinery drives. Surplus and tested used, which is usually the fastest way back into production.
The awkward variants. IP66 versions, single-phase units and the US 03U variants that arrived with imported machinery.
