ABB ACS550 and ACS580 Drives
ABB / ACS550 and ACS580
The full ACS550 range with frame sizes, nominal currents and matched output chokes. Plus a numbering change between catalogue revisions that catches people sourcing from an old drive.
The ACS550 was the ABB general purpose workhorse for years and there is a very large installed base in New Zealand. It is superseded by the ACS580, which is where new specifications go.
The code is the nominal current
On the ACS550 the current code is the drive's nominal output current I2N, and the kW figure people quote is the motor power that current supports.
ACS550-01-023A-4 is a 23 A drive, which is 11 kW at 400 V. Nothing in the number says 11.
The letter A is the decimal point, so 03A3 is 3.3 A and 031A is 31 A.
The code is rounded
Worth knowing. An 012A drive has a nominal current of 11.9 A, and an 015A is 15.4 A.
Use the code to identify the drive, then read the actual current from the table. Do not size a motor off the digits.
Complete ACS550-01 range at 380 to 480 V
From the ABB ACS550 catalogue. Voltage range covers 380, 400, 415, 440, 460 and 480 V.
| Type | Frame | Nominal current I2N | Motor power, normal use | Motor power, light overload |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| ACS550-01-195A-4 | R6 | 195 A |
The larger frames are ACS550-02
| Type | Frame | Nominal current |
|---|---|---|
| ACS550-02-245A-4 | R7 | 245 A |
| ACS550-02-289A-4 | R7 | 289 A |
| ACS550-02-368A-4 | R8 | 368 A |
| ACS550-02-486A-4 | R8 | 486 A |
| ACS550-02-526A-4 | R8 | 526 A |
| ACS550-02-602A-4 | R8 | 602 A |
Note the construction digit changes from 01 to 02 at the top of the range. The 01 is wall mounted; the 02 is floor standing. If you are replacing a large drive, that is a different physical installation.
Important: the codes changed between catalogue revisions
This is worth knowing before you order from a number on an old drive.
Different ACS550 catalogue revisions list different current codes for the same part of the range. Examples we have found across ABB catalogue revisions:
| One revision lists | Another lists |
|---|---|
| 044A | 045A |
| 096A | 097A |
| 124A | 125A |
| 087A | 078A |
So a number read off a drive installed fifteen years ago may not appear in a current catalogue at all. That does not mean the drive does not exist or that we cannot supply it.
Send us the number exactly as it appears on the label. If it does not match a current listing we will work back from the frame size and nominal current to identify what you actually have.
This is exactly the kind of thing that makes a legacy drive hard to source through normal channels, and it is a large part of what we do.
Matched output chokes
Output chokes are matched to the drive rating, not generic. The pairings from the ABB catalogue:
| Choke | Drives |
|---|---|
| NOCH-0016-6X | 03A3, 04A1, 05A4, 06A9, 08A8, 012A, 015A |
| NOCH-0030-6X | 023A, 031A, 038A |
| NOCH-0070-6X | 045A, 059A, 072A, 096A |
| NOCH-0120-6X | 124A |
| FOCH-0260-70 | 157A, 180A, 195A, 245A |
| FOCH-0320-50 | 289A, 368A |
| FOCH-0610-70 | 486A, 526A, 602A |
NOCH and FOCH are different families, and the changeover sits between the R5 and R6 frames. If your installation has a choke fitted, the replacement drive needs a compatible one.
Long motor cable runs are the usual reason a choke is there. If someone removes it during a drive swap, the symptom is motor insulation failure months later.
The same code means different drives at different voltages
An important consequence of current-based coding.
| Voltage digit | Supply | Example codes in that range |
|---|---|---|
| -2 | 200 to 240 V | 06A6, 07A5, 012A, 017A, 024A, 031A |
| -4 | 380 to 480 V | 03A3, 04A1, 05A4, 06A9, 08A8, 012A, 015A, 023A, 031A |
| -6 | 500 to 600 V | 02A7, 03A9, 06A1, 09A0, 011A, 017A, 022A, 027A, 032A, 041A, 052A, 062A, 077A, 099A, 125A, 144A |
012A appears at both -2 and -4, and 031A appears at both -2 and -4. They are the same current at different voltages, which means completely different motor powers and completely different drives.
New Zealand plant is normally -4. A -6 unit indicates 500 V or 600 V equipment, often imported machinery.
Construction and packaging codes
| Code | Construction |
|---|---|
| -01 | Wall mounted, IEC, 0.75 to 160 kW |
| -02 | Floor standing, larger frames |
| -U1 | US wall mount, 1 to 200 hp, with control panel and EMC filter |
| -CC | With two contactor bypass and circuit breaker |
| -PC | With circuit breaker |
| -PD | With fused disconnect |
The CC, PC and PD variants are packaged drives that include switchgear in the enclosure. Replacing one with a plain -01 leaves you without the disconnect or bypass that was part of the installation.
If your drive has a door-mounted isolator or a bypass contactor as part of the same unit, say so.
The plus codes
ABB appends four-figure option codes to the ACS550 type code, and you can stack as many as the build needs.
Common ones include enclosure ratings and filter options. Send the full designation including everything after the plus sign, because a +B055 or similar changes what arrives.
Moving to the ACS580
The ACS580 is ABB's successor to the ACS550.
| ACS580-01 feature | Notes |
|---|---|
| Standard enclosure | IP21 on the wall-mounted ACS580-01 |
| Built in as standard | EMC filter, brake chopper, swinging choke and Safe Torque Off |
| Ambient | Minus 15 to plus 50 degrees C on the ACS580-01, no frost |
| Functional safety | SIL 3 to IEC 61508 and IEC 61511, SIL CL 3 to IEC 62061, PL e to EN ISO 13849-1 |
The built-in brake chopper and choke matter when comparing prices. On some competing drives those are separate items, so an ACS580 that looks dearer on the line may not be once the installation is complete.
But it is not a drop-in for an ACS550. Different dimensions, different parameter structure, different terminal layout. Check panel space and budget commissioning time.
Example: an ACS580-01-033A-4 is rated 32 A, around 15 kW at 400 V, frame R3. The plus code +B056 makes it IP55.
Or keep the ACS550 running
If a line is down tonight, a surplus or tested used ACS550 of the same type code gets you going with no reprogramming, no panel modification and no recommissioning.
Migrate to the ACS580 on a planned outage when it suits you, not when a drive fails.
That is the case for holding a spare too. The ACS550 installed base is large, secondary supply thins out over time, and a spare drive costs less than an unplanned outage.
What usually fails
Cooling fans. Bearings dry out and the drive overheats. Far cheaper than a drive and frequently the actual fault.
The control panel. Buttons and display wear. Also a separate part.
DC bus capacitors on drives that have sat unpowered for long periods.
Before condemning a drive, check whether the fault is a fan or a panel. We supply both.
What we can supply
ACS550 across the full range. Surplus, new old stock and tested used, including the older current codes that no longer appear in current catalogues.
ACS580 current production. Quoted with a delivered lead time, including plus code options.
Spares and accessories. Fans, control panels, NOCH and FOCH output chokes, fieldbus adapters and option modules.
We buy ACS550
If you are upgrading to ACS580, the old drives are worth money to plants still running them. So are the chokes and control panels. See Sell To Us.
