SEW MOVITRAC B Inverters
SEW-Eurodrive / MOVITRAC B
Removing the FBG11B keypad from a running MOVITRAC triggers a stop response. It is not a plug-in display you can borrow from a working drive while the line is going.
MOVITRAC B is the SEW general purpose inverter, on conveyors and materials handling across New Zealand.
Reading a MOVITRAC B type code
Take MC07B0015-5A3-4-00.
| Part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| MC07B | MOVITRAC B |
| 0015 | Power. 1.5 kW |
| 5A3 | Voltage and phases |
| 4-00 | Design and variant |
SEW confirms the power reading directly: a 1.5 kW motor can be connected to an MC07B0015.
The voltage and phase group
The most useful part to be able to read, because it decides the supply.
| Group | Supply |
|---|---|
| -2B1 | 230 V, single phase. 1 x 200 to 240 V AC |
| -203 | 230 V, three phase. 3 x 200 to 240 V AC |
| -5A3 | 400 to 500 V, three phase. 3 x 380 to 500 V AC |
The last digit of that group is the phase count. A 1 is single phase and a 3 is three phase.
So MC07B0015-2B1 and MC07B0015-203 are the same power on single and three phase. One character.
The small ratings do not follow the same progression
Worth flagging so nobody calculates a size from the code.
| Type | Power |
|---|---|
| MC07B0003 | 0.25 kW |
| MC07B0004 | 0.37 kW |
| MC07B0005 | 0.55 kW |
| MC07B0015 | 1.5 kW |
| MC07B0220 | 22 kW |
| MC07B0300 | 30 kW |
From about 1.5 kW upward the code reads as tenths of a kilowatt. The smallest frames use their own numbering.
Send the whole code and we will confirm it rather than working it out.
Two front slots, and they are not interchangeable
The thing to understand before ordering any MOVITRAC front module.
SEW states that MOVITRAC B has 2 slots for directly pluggable modules, that modules can only be connected to the predefined slot, and that only one module per slot is possible.
Three modules compete for the same slot
The specific constraint, in SEW's own words: FIO11B, FSC11B, FSC12B and FSE24B connect to the same slot and thus cannot be used simultaneously.
| Module | What it gives |
|---|---|
| FIO11B | Analog. Setpoint input, analog output, RS485 |
| FSC11B, FSC12B | Communication. SBus, RS-485, CANopen |
| FSE24B | EtherCAT |
So you cannot have the analog setpoint module and the communication module at the same time. A machine using an analog speed reference cannot also take an FSC11B in that slot.
That is a real design constraint and it catches people trying to add a network to an existing analog installation.
Tell us what is fitted and what you are trying to add, and we will check it before quoting.
The FSC11B is a shared port
And only one thing connects to it at a time.
SEW lists what an FSC11B can connect, noting only one option possible:
| Connects |
|---|
| DBG60B keypad |
| UFx or UOH gateway |
| UWS or USB interface adapter |
| SBus or RS-485 |
| DOP operator terminals |
| MBG11A speed control module |
So a drive with a DOP terminal on the FSC11B cannot also take a laptop on the same port. Unplug one to use the other.
Worth knowing before someone drives to site expecting to connect a PC to a drive that has an operator terminal on it.
Removing the keypad stops the drive
Stated plainly by SEW and genuinely surprising.
Removing the FBG11B keypad will trigger a stop response.
| Consequence |
|---|
| You cannot borrow a keypad from a running drive |
| Pulling one to check another stops the machine |
| A keypad that works loose can stop a drive intermittently |
That last one is worth remembering. A MOVITRAC that stops for no apparent reason, on a machine with vibration, is worth checking at the keypad seating before anything else.
This is the opposite of the Lenze AIF module on our 8200 page, which can be pulled during operation. Do not assume the behaviour carries across brands.
The UBP11A parameter module
The part that makes a MOVITRAC replacement quick, and most sites do not have one.
SEW describes the UBP11A parameter module as giving simplified data backup with an option for series startup.
| What it does |
|---|
| Backs up the parameter set off a drive |
| Loads it into another drive |
| Sets up a run of identical drives in sequence |
Two reasons to have one
A failed drive becomes a swap. Fit the replacement, load the parameters from the module, run.
And a line of identical conveyor drives can be set up in minutes. That is what series startup means, and on a plant with twenty MOVITRACs it is the difference between an afternoon and a day.
It costs very little and no software licence is involved. If a site runs MOVITRAC and has no UBP11A, that is the cheapest useful thing to buy.
The keypads
| Keypad | Notes | SEW part |
|---|---|---|
| FBG11B | Basic, pluggable front module. LED display, process values, status, error memory and reset | 1820 635 2 |
| DBG60B | Plain text keypad. Connects via FSC11B |
The FBG11B reads the error memory, which is the first thing to check on a drive that has been tripping.
The DBG60B gives plain text rather than codes, which matters when nobody has the fault list to hand.
Note the DBG60B is the same keypad used on MOVIDRIVE, so one serves both ranges.
The S0 variant needs an external supply
A trap on a specific unit type.
SEW is explicit: the MC07B...-S0 unit type must always be supplied by an external DC 24 V power supply unit.
So an S0 drive will not power up on mains alone. If one has been fitted where a standard unit was, and nobody ran the 24 V, it does nothing.
Check the suffix. It is at the end of the type code and easy to overlook.
Fieldbus options need external supply too
SEW notes that fieldbus options such as DFP21B, DFD11B and DFE11B must always be supplied externally.
That is why a fieldbus card can go dead when the drive is isolated, and why the PLC loses the node even though the network is intact.
If a drive drops off the bus whenever the mains is switched, check whether the card has its own 24 V.
Derate 20 percent at 500 V
A sizing point that catches people, and SEW repeats it throughout the manual.
The mains and output currents must be reduced by 20 percent from the nominal values at a mains voltage of 3 x AC 500 V.
So a drive rated for a motor at 400 V will not carry the same motor at 500 V. The nameplate figure is not the figure at the top of the voltage range.
Relevant on plant running at the upper end, and on machinery built for other markets.
Touch guards are not optional
SEW carries a direct danger notice: uncovered power connections, severe or fatal injuries from electric shock.
| SEW's instruction |
|---|
| Install the touch guard according to the regulations |
| Never start the unit if the touch guard is not installed |
If a panel has been worked on and the guards were not refitted, that is a finding. They are cheap and separately available.
The fieldbus option cards
| Card | Network |
|---|---|
| DFP21B | PROFIBUS DP-V1 |
| DFE32B | PROFINET IO |
| DFE33B | Modbus TCP and EtherNet/IP |
| DFE24B | EtherCAT |
| DFD11B | DeviceNet |
CANopen is integrated in the basic unit, so it does not need a card.
The DFP21B is common to MOVITRAC and MOVIDRIVE, so a PROFIBUS card may transfer between them.
Interface adapters
| Adapter | Connects |
|---|---|
| USB11A | PC via USB |
| UWS21B | PC via RS232 |
| UWS11A | PC serial |
A USB11A is the one most sites need and do not have. Without an adapter nobody can connect MOVITOOLS MotionStudio to a drive.
Worth having on the shelf alongside the spares.
The accessories that go with a drive
| Part | Function |
|---|---|
| ND | Line choke |
| NF | Line filter |
| HD | Output choke |
| HF | Output filter |
| BW | Braking resistor |
| FKB | Submounting option for the BW resistor |
| FHS | Support rail mounting |
| FKE | EMC module |
| EI7C | Built-in encoder |
| MBG11A | Speed control module |
An output choke or filter is fitted where the motor cable is long. If one is in the panel it was there for a reason, and leaving it out on a rebuild brings the original problem back.
Motor protection inputs
MOVITRAC accepts either type of motor thermal device.
| Device | Type |
|---|---|
| TF | Thermistor |
| TH | Bimetallic switch |
An open circuit on the thermal input reads as an over-temperature. If a drive trips on motor temperature and the motor is cold, check the device and its wiring first.
Startup assumes a four-pole motor
Useful to know when commissioning something unusual.
SEW motor startup is designed for 4-pole motors. A two-pole or six-pole motor may need a different approach.
The default operating mode is V/f, which SEW recommends where there are no particular speed quality requirements.
Multi-motor and group drives are different things
| Arrangement | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Multi-motor drive | Motors mechanically coupled, for example a chain drive with several motors |
| Group drive | Motors mechanically decoupled |
They are commissioned differently, because coupled motors share the load and decoupled ones do not.
If one drive runs several motors, tell us which arrangement it is.
What to send us
The full type code, including the phase digit and any S0 suffix.
What front modules are fitted. Keypad, analog module or communication module.
What fieldbus card is fitted, if any.
Whether you have a UBP11A or the parameter set.
The motor nameplate. Commissioning needs it.
Whether the drive runs more than one motor.
Before ordering a replacement
Read the error memory on the FBG11B. It holds what happened.
Check the keypad seating if the drive stops for no reason. Removing it triggers a stop.
Check the thermal input if it trips on motor temperature with a cold motor.
Check the fieldbus card has its 24 V if the drive drops off the bus when the mains is switched.
Check the front module rather than the drive. A failed communication module looks like a dead drive from the PLC side.
What we can supply
Current production. MOVITRAC B across the power range and all supply variants, front modules, keypads, UBP11A parameter modules, fieldbus cards, interface adapters, line and output chokes and filters, braking resistors, touch guards and mounting accessories. Quoted with a delivered lead time.
Discontinued. Earlier MOVITRAC generations. Surplus and tested used, which keeps an existing machine on its original parameter set and mounting.
Modules separately. Often the actual fault, and always cheaper than a drive.
A sensible MOVITRAC spares holding
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| A UBP11A parameter module | Turns a drive failure into a swap, and sets up a line quickly |
| A USB11A adapter | Without one, nobody can connect a PC |
| One FBG11B keypad | Reads the error memory on any drive |
| Touch guards | Cheap, and required |
None of these are expensive and all of them are cheaper than the alternative.
