Pilz PSS Controllers, PIT Devices and PMC Drives
Pilz / PSS controllers, PIT operator devices and PMC drives
The F versus S letter decides whether a module is part of your safety function. Plus what PITmode needs that is not in the box.
This page covers the rest of the Pilz range: PSS and PSSuniversal safety controllers, PIT operator and access devices, PMD monitoring relays, PMC servo drives and PMI terminals.
PSSuniversal: F is failsafe, S is standard
The most important thing here, and it repeats the trap that runs through the PNOZmulti range.
| Module | Rating |
|---|---|
| PSSu E F 4DI | 4 digital inputs, failsafe |
| PSSu E S 4DI | 4 digital inputs, standard, not safety rated |
| PSSu E F 4DO 0.5 | 4 digital outputs, failsafe |
| PSSu E S 4DO 0.5 | 4 digital outputs, standard |
F and S modules look alike, fit the same base and appear to work identically. Only the F modules are part of the safety function.
The same letter convention runs through the PSS u2 range: EF modules are failsafe, ES modules are standard.
When you send us a module number, we will flag which category it is in. If you are replacing a failed module, check the original rather than matching on I/O count.

PITmode needs a PITreader
An ordering catch worth knowing before you quote a job.
The PITmode safe evaluation unit handles operating mode selection: four operating modes OM1 to OM4 plus a special mode OM5, with a Key ID interface that reads the transponder key.
Pilz lists required accessories, not optional ones:
| Item | Order number |
|---|---|
| PITreader base unit | 402255 |
| PITreader S base unit | 402256 |
| PITreader key adapter | Required |
You need one of the two base units and the key adapter. A PITmode evaluation unit on its own cannot read a key and cannot select a mode.
Optional accessories are the connector set, order number 402306, and the PIT oe 4S, order number 402311.
PITmode and PITreader models
| Model | Type |
|---|---|
| PIT m3p | PITmode evaluation unit |
| PIT m3.1p, PIT m3.2p, PIT m3.3p | PITmode variants |
| PIT m3p KEY MODE 01 to 04 | Transponder keys, one per operating mode |
| PIT m3p KEY SERVICE | Service key |
| PIT m2 key2hq | Key module |
| PITreader, PITreader S | Base units |
| PITreader KEY | Transponder key |
| PITreader key adapter | Required accessory |
| PITreader card holder | Plastic holder, order numbers 402320 and 402321 |
| PIT oe 4S | Expansion, 402311 |
| PIT gb | Gateway |
Keys are ordered per operating mode. KEY MODE 01 through 04 are separate parts. If a machine has four modes and someone has lost the key for mode 3, that is a specific part number.
PITestop E-STOP devices
| Order number | Description |
|---|---|
| 400432 | PITestop E-STOP and contact block set. Pushbutton with E-STOP symbol and logo, plus contact block with monitoring, 2 n/c, screw terminals |
| 400447 | As above, including surface mount housing |
The difference between those two is the housing. If you are mounting into an existing panel cutout you want 400432; if you need a standalone box on a machine frame you want 400447.
PIT es pushbuttons and accessories
| Model | Type |
|---|---|
| PIT es1.11, es1.12, es1.13, es1.15 | E-STOP pushbuttons |
| PIT es3.11, es3.13, es3.15 | E-STOP pushbuttons |
| PIT es5.11, es5.13 | E-STOP pushbuttons |
| PIT es6, PIT esb6, PIT esb | E-STOP variants |
| PIT es Set, PIT es Set/1 | Sets |
| PIT es box | Enclosure |
| PIT es holder, PIT MHR3 holder, PIT MHR5 holder | Mounting holders |
| PITestop installation wrench | Fitting tool for PIT es pushbuttons |
The installation wrench is a real part. If you are fitting several E-STOPs it is worth having rather than improvising.
PSENmlock guard locking, full model list
Expanding on the PSEN page, since these numbers are easy to confuse.
| Model | Notes |
|---|---|
| PSEN ml b 1.1, b 2.1, b 2.2 | Basic versions |
| PSEN ml s 1.1, s 2.1, s 2.2 | Series connection versions |
| PSEN ml ba 1.1, ba 2.1, ba 2.2 | Basic with auxiliary release |
| PSEN ml sa 1.1, sa 2.1, sa 2.2 | Series with auxiliary release |
| PSEN ml s 1.1 unit r | Unit with restart interlock |
| PSEN ml escape release | Escape release accessory |
| PSEN ml auxiliary release | Auxiliary release accessory |
| PSEN ml (actuator) | Actuator only |
| PSEN ml mounting plate | Accessory |
| PSEN ml bracket sliding door | Accessory |
| PSEN ml bracket swinging door | Accessory |
| PSEN ml door handle | Accessory |
The b and s letters are the wiring version. b is basic for individual wiring; s is for series connection. If your gates are daisy-chained you need the s version.
Escape release and auxiliary release are different things. An escape release lets someone trapped inside open the guard from within. An auxiliary release allows manual release from outside, typically with a tool. Check which your machine has before ordering.
PSENslock models
| Model |
|---|
| PSEN sl-0.5p, PSEN sl-0.5n |
| PSEN sl-0.5p (switch), PSEN sl-0.5n (switch) |
| PSEN sl-0.5 (actuator) |
| PSEN sl-0.5p 3.1/4.1/4.2, PSEN sl-0.5p 5.1/6.1/6.2 |
| PSEN sl-1.0p 1.1, PSEN sl-1.0p 2.1/2.2, PSEN sl-1.0n |
| PSEN sl-1.0p (switch) |
| PSEN sl restart interlock |
Note again the switch and actuator distinction in the naming. The 0.5 and 1.0 refer to magnetic holding force in kilonewtons, so PSEN sl-0.5 is 500 N and PSEN sl-1.0 is 1000 N.
PMC servo drives and motors
| Family | Models |
|---|---|
| PMCprimo, motion controllers | PMCprimo 16+, Drive1, Drive2, Drive3 |

| PMCprotego, safe servo amplifiers | PMCprotego D.03/480V Base, PMCprotego D.48/480V Base |
The PMCtendo numbering carries the voltage. A DD5.03/230V and a DD5.03/480V are the same frame at different supply voltages. Read the whole designation.
PMI operator terminals
| Model |
|---|
| PMI v326 |
| PMI v704e, PMI v707e |
| PMI 5 |
| PMI-PRO |

Important: safety replacements
Safety components are certified as part of a machine's safety function, with a rated Category or Performance Level.
A like-for-like replacement of the same order number preserves that assessment. A substitution may not. Substituting a standard-rated module for a failsafe one, a basic guard lock for a series-connection version, or a unit without escape release where one is fitted, can change the achieved Performance Level or leave someone unable to exit a guarded area.
We will supply the exact order number you specify. If you ask us to suggest an alternative we will tell you what we think is equivalent and what differs, but the decision on whether a substitution is valid for your safety function belongs to whoever is responsible for the machine's safety assessment. We are a parts supplier, not your safety engineer.
What we can supply
Current production. PSSuniversal and PSS u2 modules, PSS67, PIT operator and access devices, PITreader, PSENmlock and PSENslock, PMD monitors, PMC drives. Quoted with a delivered lead time.
Discontinued. Legacy PSS controllers, older PMI terminals and earlier PMC drives. Surplus and tested used.
The small accessories. Transponder keys, key adapters, mounting brackets, door handles and installation tools. Frequently what is actually needed and awkward to source.
