Pilz PNOZmulti Configurable Safety Controllers
Pilz / PNOZmulti
Base units, expansion modules and communication gateways. Plus the module pairs where one is safety rated and the other is not.
PNOZmulti is the Pilz configurable safety controller range. Instead of wiring individual safety relays, you configure safety logic in software and download it to a base unit.
There are three generations in service: the original PNOZmulti, PNOZmulti Mini, and the current PNOZmulti 2.
Read this before ordering an I/O module
The most important thing on this page. Some PNOZmulti modules are safety rated and some are not, and the model numbers look similar.
| Module | Rating |
|---|---|
| PNOZ mi1p | 8 safe inputs |
| PNOZ mi2p | 8 inputs for standard applications, not safety rated |
| PNOZ mo1p | 4 safe semiconductor outputs |
| PNOZ mc1p | 16 semiconductor outputs for standard applications |
A PNOZ mi2p in place of a PNOZ mi1p physically fits, powers up and reads inputs. It is not part of the safety function. The machine will run and the safety rating will be gone.
When you send us a module number, we will flag which category it falls in. If you are replacing a failed module, check the original rather than matching on function.
PNOZmulti 2 base units
| Order number | Model | Specification |
|---|---|---|
| 772100 | PNOZ m B0 | Expandable base unit. 20 safe digital inputs, 4 safe semiconductor outputs on revision 3.x. Mini-USB, cross-wire monitoring, backlit display |
| 772101 | PNOZ m B1 | PL e and Category 4 to ISO 13849-1. USB plus 2 x Ethernet 10/100 with switch, cross-wire monitoring, backlit display |
| PNOZ m B0.1 | Standalone or expandable by one I/O module. Successor to PNOZmulti Mini | |
| PNOZ m C0 | Standalone, not expandable. 8 inputs, 4 safe semiconductor outputs | |
| PNOZ m B1 Burner | Burner application variant |
Note the revision on the PNOZ m B0. Pilz describes 772100 revision 3.x as having 20 safe digital inputs and extended functions, where earlier descriptions give 12 safe inputs, 4 safe outputs and 8 configurable safe I/O. If you are buying used, the revision matters.
The PNOZ m B0.1 takes exactly one I/O module
Pilz is explicit: the B0.1 can be standalone, or expanded with a maximum of one I/O module. Your options are:
| Module | Configuration |
|---|---|
| PNOZ m EF 2DOR | Relay outputs |
| PNOZ m EF 16DI | 16 digital inputs |
| PNOZ m EF 8DI4DO | 8 inputs, 4 outputs |
| PNOZ m EF 8DI2DOT | 8 inputs, 2 outputs |
| PNOZ m EF 4DI4DOR | 4 inputs, 4 relay outputs |
| PNOZ m EF 4DI4DORD | 4 inputs, 4 relay outputs, delayed |
One, not several. If your application needs more I/O than one module gives, you need a different base unit, not more modules.
PNOZmulti 2 expansion modules
I/O modules, the EF range
| Model | Configuration |
|---|---|
| PNOZ m EF 16DI | 16 digital inputs |
| PNOZ m EF 8DI4DO | 8 inputs, 4 outputs |

| PNOZ m EF 4DI4DOR | 4 inputs, 4 relay outputs |
| PNOZ m EF 4DI4DORD | 4 inputs, 4 relay outputs, delayed |
| PNOZ m EF 2DOR | 2 relay outputs |
| PNOZ m EF 4AI | 4 analog inputs |
| PNOZ m EF 1MM | 1 motion monitoring channel |
| PNOZ m EF 2MM | 2 motion monitoring channels |
| PNOZ m EF 1MM2DO | 1 motion monitoring channel, 2 outputs |
| PNOZ m ES 14DO | 14 digital outputs |
| PNOZ m ES 16DI | 16 digital inputs |
Communication gateways, the ES range
| Model | Network |
|---|---|
| PNOZ m ES ETH | Ethernet |
| PNOZ m ES EtherNet/IP | EtherNet/IP |
| PNOZ m ES Profinet | PROFINET |
| PNOZ m ES Profibus | PROFIBUS |
| PNOZ m ES EtherCAT | EtherCAT |
| PNOZ m ES CANopen | CANopen |
| PNOZ m ES CC-Link | CC-Link |
| PNOZ m ES RS232 | Serial |
| PNOZ m ES Powerlink | POWERLINK |
Link and safe network modules
| Model | Function |
|---|---|
| PNOZ m EF Multi Link | Link between PNOZmulti units |
| PNOZ m EF PDP Link | Link to decentralised PDP modules |
| PNOZ m EF SafetyNET | SafetyNET p |
| PNOZ m EF EtherCAT FSoE | Safety over EtherCAT |
Original PNOZmulti
Base units
| Model | Notes |
|---|---|
| PNOZ m0p | Base unit, not expandable |
| PNOZ m1p | Base unit, expandable |
| PNOZ m2p | Base unit, expandable |
| PNOZ m3p | Base unit, expandable |
The m0p does not take expansion modules. If you have an m0p and need more I/O, that is a base unit change.
Input and output modules
| Model | Configuration | Safety rated |
|---|---|---|
| PNOZ mi1p | 8 inputs | Yes |
| PNOZ mi2p | 8 inputs | No, standard applications |
| PNOZ mo1p | 4 semiconductor outputs | Yes |
| PNOZ mo2p | 2 relay outputs | Yes |
| PNOZ mo3p | 2 two-pole semiconductor outputs | Yes |
| PNOZ mo4p | 4 relay outputs | Yes |
| PNOZ mo5p | 4 diverse relay outputs | Yes |
| PNOZ mc1p | 16 semiconductor outputs | No, standard applications |
Communication modules
| Model |
|---|
| PNOZ mc2p, mc4p, mc6p, mc6.1p, mc10p |
Link modules and decentralised I/O
| Model | Function |
|---|---|
| PNOZ ml1p | Connects two base units |
| PNOZ ml2p | Connects a base unit to up to four decentralised PDP67 modules |
| PDP67 F 8DI ION | IP67 decentralised module, 8 safe inputs |
| PDP67 F 8DI ION HP | IP67 decentralised module, 8 safe inputs |
The PDP67 modules are IP67 rated for on-machine mounting rather than in a cabinet. Useful where running every safety input back to a panel is impractical.
PNOZmulti Mini
| Model | Type |
|---|---|
| PNOZ mm0p, mm0.1p, mm0.2p, mm0p-T | Base units |
| PNOZ mmc1p, mmc2p, mmc3p, mmc4p | Expansion modules |
| PNOZ mmc6p, mmc7p CC, mmc11p, mmc12p | Expansion modules |
| PNOZ mml1p, mml2p | Link modules |
PNOZmulti Mini is superseded by the PNOZ m B0.1, which Pilz describes as a compatible successor. If you are planning a replacement rather than a like-for-like spare, that is the path.
Note also that the PNOZsigma dual relay expansion module connects to the PNOZ mm0.1p and PNOZ mm0.2p as well as the PNOZ s30. See the PNOZsigma page.
The configuration is the hard part, not the hardware
A PNOZmulti base unit is configured with PNOZmulti Configurator software and the configuration is downloaded to the unit.
A replacement base unit arrives blank. Without the original configuration file the machine will not run, and recreating a safety configuration from scratch is a safety engineering exercise rather than a maintenance task.
If you run PNOZmulti anywhere, the question worth asking today is whether you have the configuration files backed up and whether anyone knows where they are. That is free to check and expensive to discover during a breakdown.
Important: safety replacements
Safety components are certified as part of a machine's safety function, with a rated Category or Performance Level.
A like-for-like replacement of the same model preserves that assessment. A substitution may not. Substituting a standard-rated module for a safety-rated one, or a different base unit revision, can change the achieved Performance Level even where the machine appears to run normally.
We will supply the exact model you specify. If you ask us to suggest an alternative we will tell you what we think is equivalent and what differs, but the decision on whether a substitution is valid for your safety function belongs to whoever is responsible for the machine's safety assessment. We are a parts supplier, not your safety engineer.
What we can supply
Current production. PNOZmulti 2 base units, EF and ES expansion and gateway modules. Quoted with a delivered lead time.
Mature and discontinued. Original PNOZmulti base units and modules, PNOZmulti Mini, PDP67 decentralised I/O. Surplus and tested used.
The original PNOZmulti generation is where we are most useful. Those machines are still running and the modules are no longer easy to buy.
