Pilz PSENopt Safety Light Curtains
Pilz / PSENopt light curtains
The model name encodes the type rating and what it protects. And the cables are not in the box.
PSENopt and PSENopt II are the Pilz safety light curtain ranges, used for finger, hand and body protection on presses, robot cells, conveyors and access points.
Current production, quoted with a delivered lead time.
Cables are not supplied
Pilz states it repeatedly across the range: connection cables are not supplied with the device. On the advanced models, pigtail cables are not supplied either.
A light curtain is a transmitter and a receiver, each needing a cable. Order the curtain alone and you have two devices you cannot connect.
Tell us the run length and we will quote the cables with it. Pilz supplies PUR cables in yellow RAL1003, M12 A-coded, 5-pin, in lengths including 3 m, 20 m and 30 m.
How to read a PSENopt model
Take PSEN op4H-s.
| Part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| PSEN op | Optoelectronic protective device |
| 4 | Type rating. See below |
| H | What it protects. Hand |
| -s | Variant |
The type number is a safety rating, not a model number
| Type | Performance Level |
|---|---|
| Type 2 | PL c |
| Type 4 | PL e |
This is the most important character in the number. A PSEN op2H and a PSEN op4H both give hand protection at 30 mm resolution. One achieves PL c and the other PL e.
If your risk assessment calls for PL e, a Type 2 curtain does not meet it, however similar the specification looks. Substituting one for the other is not a like-for-like replacement.
PSENopt II adds Type 3 to the range.
The letter gives resolution and application
| Letter | Protection | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| F | Finger | 14 mm |
| H | Hand | 30 mm |
| B | Body | Coarser, beam based |
Resolution is the smallest object the curtain will reliably detect. A 30 mm hand-protection curtain will not detect a finger. If someone can reach through with a finger to a hazard, hand protection is not sufficient.
Feature suffixes
| Suffix | Feature |
|---|---|
| -b | Blanking |
| -m | Muting |
| -bm | Blanking and muting |
| -A | Advanced |
| -s | Standard variant |
| -sl, -SL | Variant |
| -T, -L, -S | Body protection variants |
| /1 | Generation |
Muting and blanking are not cosmetic options. Muting temporarily and safely suspends protection so material can pass. Blanking allows a fixed object to sit permanently in the field. If your application uses either, a curtain without that feature will simply trip.

| PSEN opII4B-s | Type 4, body |
PSENopt II Basic Type 4 curtains meet EN/IEC 61496-1 and -2 and are available without dead zones, which matters when mounting close to a hazard.
Protected field heights
Curtains are ordered by protected field height. Confirmed heights across the PSENopt II range include:
| Hand protection, 30 mm | Finger protection, 14 mm |
|---|---|
| 300 mm | 1350 mm |
| 600 mm | 1500 mm |
| 900 mm | 1650 mm |
| 1050 mm | |
| 1200 mm |
Supply is 24 V. Connectors are M12, transmitter 5-pin, receiver 5-pin on basic models. On blanking and muting models the receiver is 12-pin.
Mirror columns, and the sizing rule
Mirror columns turn a beam around a corner so one curtain can guard two or three sides of a cell.
The mirror must be longer than the protected field it serves. Pilz publishes the pairing, and the difference is consistent.
| Mirror column | Mirror length | Maximum protected field |
|---|---|---|
| PSEN opII Mirror Column-060 | 600 mm | 450 mm |
| PSEN opII Mirror Column-090 | 900 mm | 750 mm |
| PSEN opII Mirror Column-120 | 1200 mm | 1050 mm |
| PSEN opII Mirror Column-165 | 1650 mm | 1500 mm |
| PSEN opII Mirror Column-195 | 1950 mm | 1800 mm |
Do not size the mirror to the field height. A 1200 mm protected field needs the 1650 mm column, not the 1200 mm one. Getting this wrong means the beam clips the end of the mirror and the curtain will not align.
Mirror columns work with both PSENopt and PSENopt II. Sets include the column, fixing screws and the PSEN opII adjustable base unit.
Accessories
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Laser alignment aid | For PSENopt II. Alignment is the usual cause of intermittent tripping |
| Mounting kit | Standard fixing for PSENopt II |
| Expanded mounting kit | 3 degrees of freedom, in 2-part and 3-part versions |
| Reset lock accessory | PU = 1 lockout, 2 one-way screws M4x12, 1 threaded pin M3x12, 2 slot nuts |
| Y-adapter cable | T connector, IP67, connects transmitter and receiver to one M12 port |
| Slot nuts | For fitting accessories to the light guard profile. Minimum pack 4 |
| PSEN op Ethernet cable | 3 m |
| PSEN op Advanced Programming Adapter | For -A models |
The laser alignment aid is worth mentioning to anyone with a nuisance-tripping curtain. Long-range curtains drift out of alignment as machinery settles, and the symptom looks like a faulty device.
Programming
Advanced models are configured either through the PSENoptConfigurator software or directly on the light guard.
If you are replacing a configured curtain, the new one arrives at defaults. Muting timings, blanking zones and cascading setups all need re-entering, so have the configuration recorded before the swap.
Important: safety replacements
Safety components are certified as part of a machine's safety function, with a rated Type and Performance Level.
A like-for-like replacement of the same model preserves that assessment. A substitution may not. A Type 2 curtain in place of a Type 4, a coarser resolution, a different protected field height or a model without muting can change the achieved Performance Level or leave a gap in the guarded area.
Light curtain positioning also depends on response time, which feeds into the safety distance calculation. A device with a different response time changes the required mounting distance.
We will supply the exact model you specify. If you ask us to suggest an alternative we will tell you what we think is equivalent and what differs, but the decision on whether a substitution is valid for your safety function belongs to whoever is responsible for the machine's safety assessment. We are a parts supplier, not your safety engineer.
What we can supply
Current production. The full PSENopt and PSENopt II ranges, mirror columns, mounting kits, cables and alignment aids. Quoted with a delivered lead time.
The accessories especially. Mounting brackets, slot nuts and alignment aids get lost or damaged and are frequently what is actually needed.
Discontinued variants. Earlier PSENopt generations. Surplus and tested used.
