Omron / Industrial PCs, monitors and switches
An Omron NY panel PC ordered with the machine controller option is not a PC running SCADA. It is the machine's controller, running the same Sysmac runtime as an NJ, with Windows alongside it. Replacing one is replacing the PLC.
The Omron NY range covers industrial box PCs, panel PCs and display-only monitors, mostly on packaging, food and pharmaceutical lines built in the last decade. The W4S1 switches sit alongside them.

The box and panel machines are the same platform in two housings. An NY512 in a cabinet driving a separate monitor does the same job as an NY532 in the door, and the choice was made by where the operator needed to stand.
Monitor against Panel PC
The distinction that costs money, and it is invisible from the operator side.

So a blank screen does not mean a dead computer. If there is a box PC in the cabinet, the monitor is the cheap part and the video or USB cable is cheaper still.

The machine controller option
The most important thing on this page, because it changes what the device is.
An NY box or panel PC can be ordered either as a straightforward Windows industrial PC, or with a real-time machine controller running alongside Windows on the same hardware.

Why this matters commercially
The two builds look identical. Same housing, same screen, same connectors on the back.
Three consequences worth acting on:
A controller build should be spared like a PLC, not like a PC. If it fails, the line is down until it is replaced and the project is restored.
A Windows-only unit is not a valid replacement for a controller build. It will boot, it will run Windows, and it will not run the machine.
And the EtherCAT side matters. A controller build is the EtherCAT master for the machine's drives and I/O, so the network topology depends on it being there.

The Sysmac Studio project is the thing to establish before anything else. If nobody on site has it, a controller replacement is not a hardware exercise, and that is worth knowing before a shutdown rather than during one.

Resistive and capacitive are not interchangeable in a gloved environment. Resistive works with any glove; capacitive needs a conductive touch or a compatible glove.
That matters more on Omron than most, because a lot of this hardware sits in food and meat processing where operators are gloved and the panel gets hosed down. If the original was resistive, it was almost certainly chosen for that.
Storage and the parts that wear out

A clock that resets every shutdown is a coin cell, not a dying machine. Most of this list is cheaper than an hour of downtime.
W4S1 Ethernet switches
Omron's own industrial switches, commonly fitted alongside NJ, NX and NY equipment on EtherNet/IP networks.

Because they carry no configuration, these are among the easiest spares on any Omron site. One on the shelf covers every machine using them.
Not for EtherCAT
Worth being explicit about, because Omron machines frequently run both networks.
An EtherNet/IP switch cannot be used to branch an EtherCAT segment. EtherCAT is processed along a line and a standard switch breaks it.
Both use RJ45 and ordinary CAT cable, which is exactly why the mistake happens. If the port is on the EtherCAT side of an NJ, NX or NY controller, a switch is the wrong part. The same trap is covered in more detail on our Beckhoff junctions page.

Why an identical unit matters here
Worth stating plainly on this range.
A controller build is matched to the machine's EtherCAT topology and its Sysmac project. A different build, or a newer generation with a different runtime version, turns a hardware swap into a commissioning exercise and a project revalidation.
On a food or pharmaceutical line with change control, that difference is substantial. An identical used unit keeps everything exactly as it is.

Can you get a part that is not listed on your site?
Usually. The site shows what we hold, not what we can source.
My screen is dead. Do I need a new PC?
Not necessarily. If it is an NYM monitor there is no computer in it. Check whether there is a separate box PC in the cabinet.
Is an NY the same as an NJ?
No. An NJ is a dedicated controller. An NY is an industrial PC that can optionally run the same controller runtime. See our NJ and NX page.
Can I use a Windows-only unit to replace a controller build?
No. It will boot and it will not run the machine.
Can I put a W4S1 switch in my EtherCAT line?
No. EtherCAT needs a junction, not a switch.
Do you supply used equipment?
Yes, where new is not available, tested and clearly described.
