Two SIMATIC IPCs with the same model name can be different machines. The model tells you the format; the article number carries the processor, memory, drive, operating system and expansion fit. On this range the article number is the specification.

SIMATIC IPC is the Siemens industrial PC family: box PCs, panel PCs and rack PCs running SCADA, WinCC, batch systems and software controllers. Common on New Zealand process plant, packhouses and any site with an operator station that is not a Comfort Panel.

Two article number prefixes, and the age tells you which

Check this first, because it decides which generation you are looking at.

A machine can carry a 6AV7 number and a model name that also exists under 6AG4. The two are not the same hardware, and driver and image support does not carry across.

So send the prefix as well as the digits. On a discontinued unit, 6AV7 is the more likely of the two.

Reading the model number

Unusually readable once you know the two rules.

So an IPC477E is a panel PC and an IPC427E is the same class of machine without a screen. The pairing is deliberate, and it means a failed panel PC can sometimes be replaced by a box PC plus a separate monitor if the panel cutout is being changed anyway.

The generation letter is not cosmetic

An IPC477D and an IPC477E are different machines. Different processor generation, different chipset, different drivers, and in several cases a different mounting cutout.

So a like-for-like panel replacement needs the letter to match, or the panel needs modifying. Check the cutout before assuming a newer generation drops in.

The article number is the specification

The most important thing on this page, and the reason IPC quotes go wrong.

SIMATIC IPCs are configured to order. The article number encodes the processor, the memory fitted, the drive type and capacity, the operating system, the expansion cards and the interfaces.

What varies within one model name
Processor, from entry Celeron and Atom classes up to Core and Xeon
Memory, and whether it is ECC
Drive type. CFast, SSD, HDD, and RAID pairs
Operating system. Windows Embedded, Windows IoT, Windows Server, Linux, or none
Fieldbus interface. PROFIBUS or PROFINET, where fitted
Display size and touch type, on panel versions
Expansion slots and cards

None of that is visible in the model name. Two machines both labelled IPC627D can differ by a factor of several in capability and price.

So send the full article number, and if it is unreadable, send a photo of the rating plate. Quoting from the model name alone produces the wrong machine.

Display and touch on the panel versions

Two traps in that table

Resistive and capacitive are not interchangeable in a gloved environment. Resistive works with any glove and a stylus; capacitive needs a conductive touch or a compatible glove. A meat works or coolstore that specified resistive did so for a reason.

And 4:3 to widescreen changes the panel cutout. Replacing an older 15 inch 4:3 unit with a current widescreen one is fabrication work, not a swap. Worth establishing before quoting.

The PRO variants

PRO models are IP65 on all sides and mount on a support arm or pedestal rather than in a cabinet door.

They carry a different mechanical interface and are not a substitute for a cabinet-mount panel or the reverse. If the existing unit is hanging on an arm, it is a PRO.

Flat Panel monitors are a separate thing

Worth knowing when a display fails and the PC is elsewhere.

Siemens also sold display-only Flat Panel and Industrial Flat Panel units, driven remotely from a box PC over a dedicated link or standard video.

So a dead screen does not always mean a dead computer. If there is a box PC in the cabinet and a display in the door, they are two separate part numbers and either can be replaced on its own.

Where the application lives

The question that decides whether a replacement is a swap or a project.

The drive is often the part worth recovering rather than the PC. If an IPC has failed but the SSD is intact, the application and the data are intact with it, and on several models the drive moves into the replacement.

WinCC and licence keys

Siemens software licences are held as licence keys, historically on a USB dongle or a licence key storage location. Losing the machine does not automatically lose the licence, but losing the dongle can.

If a plant is decommissioning an IPC, the dongle and the recovery media are worth more than the chassis. Keep them.

Software controllers change the stakes

Worth checking before treating an IPC as an office PC in a cabinet.

Some SIMATIC IPCs run a software PLC, where the control logic executes on the industrial PC rather than in a separate S7 CPU.

Two consequences:

An IPC failure on such a machine stops the process, not just the display. It is a controller, and it should be spared like one.

And the fieldbus interface matters. A software controller reaching distributed I/O needs the right PROFINET or PROFIBUS interface, which on many units is a factory-fitted card rather than something added later.

Drives, and the CFast question

On the CFast machines the card is the computer, in the sense that matters. Move it and the application moves with it, in the same way a Beckhoff CX carries its system on a CFast card.

On a RAID unit, a drive alarm is not a reason to replace the PC. Replace the drive and let it rebuild. That is what the RAID was fitted for, and it is frequently misread as a machine failure.

The parts that wear out

Industrial PCs fail in predictable places, and most of them are cheaper than the machine.

A clock that resets every shutdown is a coin cell, not a dying PC. That one alone accounts for a fair number of unnecessary replacement quotes.

Why used matters on this range

Worth stating plainly, because it is the argument for holding an old machine.

An older SCADA or batch image is often tied to the hardware generation it was commissioned on. Drivers, licences and validated configurations do not always move forward.

So an identical used IPC keeps the system exactly as it is, where a current machine turns a failure into a migration project. On a validated or audited plant that difference is substantial.

Supply of the discontinued generations thins out and does not improve. If a machine has years left in it, the spare is worth buying while it exists.

Two units say IPC477D. Are they the same?
Not necessarily. The article number carries the processor, memory, drive and operating system. Send that.

Mine starts 6AV7 rather than 6AG4. Is that still an IPC?
Yes. 6AV7 is the older numbering for industrial and panel PCs. It usually means a discontinued unit, which is the side of the market we work in.

Will a current panel PC fit my existing cutout?
Often not. Generations change the cutout, and 4:3 to widescreen certainly does. Send the dimensions.

Can I move my drive into the replacement?
Sometimes. It depends on the model and how the operating system was licensed. Tell us both units and we will say.

Do you supply used equipment?
