The SIMOREG 6RA70 DC MASTER is the fourth generation Siemens DC drive and it is still running paper machines, extruders, cranes, winders, test rigs and older process lines across New Zealand. DC drives get replaced slowly because the motors last decades and rewinding a DC motor is cheaper than converting a line to AC.

The dates that matter

Siemens discontinued the 6RA70 range on 1 October 2020. The spare parts commitment ran through October 2022, subject to component availability.

Official supply has been gone for years. If a 6RA70 fails today your options are a used or surplus unit, a repair, or migration to the 6RA80 SINAMICS DC MASTER.

How to read a 6RA70 number

This decodes cleanly once you know the scheme, and almost nobody publishes it.

The closed-loop control board is the CUD1, mounted in an electronics box in the converter door. Before you condemn a converter, it is worth having the board checked.

What a 6RA70 actually is

A base drive converter is a complete unit ready to install: three-phase armature converter, single-phase field converter, main contactor, protective semiconductor fuses, control power transformer, and power and control terminals.

The overload rating is conditional

The 1.8 times overload only applies if the drive had been running below rated current beforehand. If it has been at rated current for a long period it cannot be overloaded at all. The drive calculates thyristor thermal condition and either reduces current automatically or trips.

If you are seeing current limit faults on a hot machine that used to be fine, that is worth understanding before you condemn the drive.

A safety note on the large units

Up to 850 A at 460 V the armature power section uses isolated thyristor modules and the heat sink is at ground potential.

On the 1180 A and 1660 A units at 460 V the armature section uses disk thyristors and the heat sinks are at line voltage potential. Housings and terminal covers provide protection, but anyone working inside one needs to know that.

The -Z option codes

Many 6RA70 numbers carry -Z followed by option codes such as +K00, +S00 or +X01. These cover additional boards, interfaces and configurations, and two drives with the same base number can be configured very differently.

When you send us a number, include everything after the dash including any Z options.

Repair, replace or migrate

If a board has failed, a board swap is far cheaper than a converter and usually a same day fix if the part is available.

If the power section has failed and the machine is staying, a used 6RA70 of the same rating needs no reprogramming or rewiring.

If the machine has years left and you have a planned outage, cost the 6RA80. The mapping above makes it straightforward.
