Two instruments with the same model name can be completely different products. The order code on the nameplate carries the process connection, the wetted materials, the seal, the pressure rating, the output signal and the hazardous area approval. Send the order code and the serial number, not the model name.

Endress+Hauser is on most New Zealand dairy, water, wastewater and food process plant. It is a configured product line rather than a catalogue of stock items, which changes how it has to be quoted.

What is on the nameplate, and why we need all of it

The model name tells us almost nothing on its own. A pressure transmitter family spans dozens of process connections, several seal materials, multiple pressure ranges and several output types.

The serial number is the most useful single thing you can send us, because the manufacturer can regenerate the original build specification from it. If the label is damaged and only the serial survives, we can usually still work out what you had.

So photograph the whole nameplate. It is faster than transcribing it and it does not introduce typing errors into a forty character string.

Hazardous area approval is not an option you can ignore

The most consequential thing on this page.

An instrument for a zoned area carries a specific approval, and an instrument without it is not a substitute regardless of how identical it looks.

So if the instrument came out of a zoned area, tell us. We will quote the approved version and we will not offer you a standard one as an alternative.

Whether a particular instrument and installation are suitable for a given zone belongs with whoever holds the site's hazardous area classification and dossier. We supply what you specify and we flag it when an approval is in the order code.

Process connection and wetted materials

Where most substitution mistakes happen, and it matters more in food and dairy than anywhere else.

Seal material is the quiet one. A seal that suits the product may not suit the caustic and acid in the clean-in-place cycle, or the temperature it runs at. That failure shows up weeks later as a leak or a contaminated batch rather than immediately.

So tell us the product, the CIP regime and the temperature, not just the connection size.

The output signal is built in

The output is set by the electronics in the instrument and is part of the order code. A HART instrument does not become a PROFIBUS instrument.

So on a replacement, match the output to what the control system expects, and tell us what the DCS or PLC is reading if you are not sure.

The configuration can usually be carried across

The good news, and it follows a pattern that runs right through this site.

Many Endress+Hauser instruments hold their configuration in a plug-in data memory rather than only in the electronics. When the electronics module is replaced, that memory can carry the settings, the calibration data and the operating history across to the new module.

Consequence
An electronics failure need not mean reconfiguring from scratch
The electronics module alone may be the part you need, not the whole instrument
The instrument's own history survives, which matters at audit

So before quoting a whole transmitter, tell us what actually failed. If it is the electronics and the sensor is sound, that is a much smaller order.

And take a configuration backup while the instrument works. Most sites can do this with a handheld communicator or the asset management software they already own.

Memosens puts the calibration in the sensor

Worth its own section, because it changes how an analysis loop is maintained.

A Memosens sensor holds its own calibration data and connects to the transmitter through a contactless coupling rather than metal pins.

So on a plant with pH or conductivity measurement, holding one calibrated spare sensor per type turns a calibration job into a plug swap. That is one of the better value spares decisions in process instrumentation.

pH sensors are consumables with a finite life regardless of how well they are treated, so they get ordered repeatedly. Worth setting up properly.

Honest position on used instruments

Worth stating plainly, because it differs from how we handle drives and PLCs.

We will tell you which of those you are in. On a measurement that determines product quality or trade, we would rather quote you new than sell you a cheaper instrument that puts the measurement in doubt.

Where an instrument is obsolete and the loop is not critical, surplus keeps a plant running for a fraction of a replacement project. Both are legitimate and they are different conversations.

Common questions

Can you get a part that is not listed on your site?
Usually. The site shows what we hold, not what we can source.

Why do you need the order code as well as the model?
Because the model is the family. The order code carries the connection, materials, range, output and approvals.

I only have the serial number.
That is usually enough. The original build specification can be recovered from it.

Can I use a non-Ex instrument in a zoned area?
No. The approval is part of the instrument and it cannot be added.

Do I have to replace the whole transmitter?
Often not. Electronics modules and displays are separate parts, and the configuration can usually be carried across.

Do you supply used instruments?
Where it makes sense. On quality, custody or hazardous area measurements we would rather quote new, and we will say so.

What is the lead time?
Configured instruments are made to order, so lead time depends on the build. We give you a firm figure with the quote.

Do you quote in NZD?
Yes, in NZD including GST for New Zealand customers.
