Schneider TeSys Contactors and Overload Relays
Schneider / TeSys contactors and overload relays
The coil voltage is the last two or three characters, and there are around forty of them. Get that wrong and you have the right contactor that will not pull in.
TeSys is the Schneider contactor range. TeSys D, now sold as TeSys Deca, covers motor control to 37 kW at 400 V, and TeSys F takes it to 670 kW.
Reading a TeSys D part number
Take LC1D09M7.
| Part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| LC1D | TeSys D contactor body |
| 09 | 9 A AC-3 rating |
| M7 | Coil voltage. 220 V AC 50/60 Hz |
The number is the AC-3 current, not the power. An LC1D09 switches motors to about 4 kW at 400 V.
LC1 is a standard contactor. LC2 is a pre-assembled reversing pair.
The complete coil voltage code table
From the Schneider Electric coil voltage reference. This is the part worth bookmarking.

DC coils, low consumption, suffix ends in L
| Volts | Code | Volts | Code |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | AL | 72 | SL |

| 20 | ZL | 110 | FL |
| 24 | BL | 220 | ML |
| 48 | EL | 250 | UL |
The three suffix families
| Ending | Coil type |
|---|---|
| 7 | AC |
| D | DC, standard |
| L | DC, low consumption |
24 V AC is B7, 24 V DC standard is BD, 24 V DC low consumption is BL. Three different parts, one character apart.
The low consumption coils exist so a PLC output can drive the contactor directly without an interposing relay. If a panel was designed around that, a standard DC coil may overload the output.
For New Zealand work the common codes are B7 for 24 V AC, BD for 24 V DC, P7 for 230 V and N7 for 415 V.
The coil is replaceable
Genuinely useful and not widely known.
TeSys D coils are field replaceable using the matching LX1D coil, so a contactor can be converted to a different control voltage rather than replaced.
So if you have the right current rating in stock on the wrong coil voltage, you may only need a coil. Tell us and we will quote the LX1D rather than the whole contactor.
TeSys D ratings
AC-3 ratings from the Schneider TeSys catalogue.
| Reference | AC-3 current | kW at 230 V | kW at 400 V | kW at 415 V | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LC1D09 | 9 A | 2.2 | 4 | 4 | 0.368 kg |
| LC1D12 | 12 A | 3 | 5.5 | 5.5 | 0.373 kg |
| LC1D18 | 18 A | 4 | 7.5 | 9 | 0.378 kg |
| LC1D25 | 25 A | 5.5 | 11 | 11 | 0.433 kg |
| LC1D32 | 32 A | 7.5 | 15 | 15 | 0.438 kg |
| LC1D38 | 38 A | 9 | 18.5 | 18.5 | 0.442 kg |
| LC1D40A | 40 A | 11 | 18.5 | 22 | 0.992 kg |
| LC1D50A | 50 A | 15 | 22 | 25 | 0.997 kg |
| LC1D65A | 65 A | 18.5 | 30 | 37 | 1.002 kg |
| LC1D80A | 80 A | 22 | 37 | 37 | 1.002 kg |
The frame changes between D38 and D40A
Look at the weights. The D38 is 0.442 kg and the D40A is 0.992 kg, more than double.
| Group | Frame |
|---|---|
| LC1D09 to LC1D38 | 45 mm frame. Shared footprint and full accessory interchangeability |
| LC1D40A to LC1D80A | Larger frame |
Going from a D38 to a D40A is a panel change, not just a rating change. Two amps of extra rating and a completely different physical size.
Within D09 to D38 you can uprate freely. The auxiliary blocks and overload relays carry across.
Also note the A suffix on the larger group. LC1D40A, not LC1D40.
Overload relays are frame limited
The trap when building a starter.
LRD thermal overload relays direct-mount beneath the contactor, but not every LRD fits every frame.
| Contactor | LRD range that direct-mounts |
|---|---|
| LC1D09 | LRD01 to LRD14, covering 0.10 to 10 A |
| LC1D12 and larger | LRD16 and above |
LRD16 and above will not direct-mount to an LC1D09. They need a minimum of an LC1D12 frame.
So if a motor needs an 11 A overload setting, the contactor has to step up too, even though a 9 A contactor might have carried the current.
Common LRD selections
| Relay | Adjustment range |
|---|---|
| LRD10 | 4 to 6 A |
| LRD14 | 7 to 10 A |
| LRD21 | 12 to 18 A |
| LRD22 | 16 to 24 A |
The full LRD range runs LRD01 to LRD35, covering 0.10 to 38 A.
Match the relay to the motor nameplate full load current, not to the contactor rating. Those are different numbers and the relay follows the motor.
Electronic alternatives
| Range | Notes |
|---|---|
| LRD | Bimetallic thermal. LRD01 to LRD35 |
| LR9D | Electronic, D frame. LR9D01 at 0.1 to 0.5 A through LR9D08 at 1.6 to 8 A |
| LR9 | Electronic, for TeSys F |
Electronic relays hold their setting better at low currents. On a small motor where a bimetallic relay is at the bottom of its range, the LR9D is the more accurate choice.
An inserted digit changes the terminals
This one looks like a typo and is not.
Schneider inserts a digit before the coil voltage code to specify the connection type.
| Part number | Connection |
|---|---|
| LC1D09M7 | Standard screw terminals |
| LC1D093M7 | Spring terminals |
| LC1D096M7 | Ring terminal connection |
| LC1D099M7 | Slip-on connectors, 2 x 6.35 power and 1 x 6.35 control. Up to D12 only |
Schneider gives the example directly: LC1D09G7 becomes LC1D099G7 for slip-on connectors.
So an LC1D093M7 is not a typing error, it is a spring terminal contactor. If a part number has an extra digit in the middle, that is what it means, and ordering without it gets you screw terminals.
On the larger frames, LC1D65A3 has EverLink BTR screw power connectors with spring control terminals.
Wide range coils
Schneider offers wide-range electronic coils, the same idea as the ABB code 13 coil on our AF contactor page.
| Code | Range | Frames |
|---|---|---|
| BNE | 24 V DC only | D09 to D80A |
| EHE | 24 to 60 V | D09 to D80A |
| KUE | 48 to 130 V | D09 to D80A |
| USE | 100 to 250 V | D09 to D80A |
| BBE | 250 to 415 V AC, 250 to 500 V DC | D40A to D80A only |
A wide range coil covers a band rather than one voltage, which cuts the number of variants you need to stock.
Note the operating tolerances differ: the standard groups work to 0.85 to 1.1 Uc, and the BBE on the larger frames to 0.8 to 1.2 Uc.
Auxiliary contacts
| Type | Mounting | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| LADN | Front | LADN11, LADN20, LADN02 |
| LAD8N | Side |
The digits are the contact configuration. LADN11 is one normally open plus one normally closed. LADN20 is two normally open. LADN02 is two normally closed.
These snap on without tools and are interchangeable across the D09 to D38 frame.
The Schneider catalogue lists the standard LC1D contactors with integral auxiliary contacts as well. If the exact auxiliary arrangement matters, tell us and we will confirm what the base contactor includes before you order add-on blocks you may not need.
TeSys D and TeSys Deca are the same product
Worth stating plainly because both names are in circulation.
TeSys Deca is the current commercial name for the range formerly sold as TeSys D, and the part numbers are unchanged. An LC1D09 ordered today is the same part as an LC1D09 in older TeSys D documentation.
The current product uses UL 60335 compliant plastics with greater endurance in heat or fire than the earlier series.
TeSys F, for the larger end
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Motor applications | 150 to 800 A AC-3 |
| Maximum motor rating | 670 kW at 440 V AC-3 |
| Resistive applications | 1250 to 2600 A AC-1 |
| 2 pole | 400, 500 and 630 A |
| 3 pole | 115 to 2600 A |
| 4 pole | 115 to 780 A |
| Reversing, pre-assembled | 3 pole AC-3, 115 to 265 A |
| Changeover, pre-assembled | 4 pole AC-1, 200 to 350 A |
| Control frequency | AC 40 to 400 Hz |
TeSys F pairs with the LR9 electronic relay or the GV7 motor circuit breaker, and mounts with the GV7-R for a complete starter.
Part numbers follow the same logic: LC1F185G7 is a TeSys F contactor with a 120 V AC coil.
Mounting
LC1D09 to D80A clip onto 35 mm DIN rail, or take screw fixing.
