Allen-Bradley Stratix Ethernet Switches

Allen-Bradley / Stratix networking

Every Stratix switch family with catalogue numbers, plus the 2024 discontinuation you may not have heard about.

Stratix is the Allen-Bradley industrial networking range: managed and unmanaged Ethernet switches, wireless access points, routers and security appliances. All carry the 1783 prefix.

Start here if you run Stratix 5700

Rockwell announced that as of 1 September 2024 the Stratix 5700 10 port managed switch is discontinued and no longer available for sale, with customers encouraged to remove references to the affected products.

The named replacement is the 1783-CMS10DN, classed as an engineering replacement rather than a drop-in.

If you have Stratix 5700 switches in service, official supply on the affected variants has ended. That puts them into secondary market territory, which is where we operate. It is also a reason to hold a spare rather than assume you can buy one when it fails.

Reading a 1783-BMS number

Element Meaning
Digits after BMS Port count
T Copper ports
S SFP fibre ports
C Combo ports
G Gigabit uplinks
L Lite firmware
A Full firmware
P Power over Ethernet
N NAT capable
K Conformal coated

The L versus A distinction matters most. Lite firmware is a reduced feature set. Two switches with the same port count and a single different letter are not the same product.

These let a non-DLR-capable device sit on a Device Level Ring. Small, cheap and frequently needed when someone adds a device to an existing ring topology.

Four installation notes from Rockwell

Grounding is through the DIN rail

Stratix switches are grounded through the DIN rail to chassis ground. Rockwell specifies zinc-plated yellow-chromate steel DIN rail to assure proper grounding.

Painted or anodised rail will not ground the switch properly. That is a real cause of network noise problems.

Console ports are temporary only

The console ports are intended for temporary local programming only, not permanent connection. Console cables must not exceed 3.0 m and must not contain hubs.

Cable specification

RJ45 to IEC 60603-7, with 2 or 4 pair Category 5e minimum cable to TIA 568-B.1, or Category 5 cable as specified.

Class A emissions

These are Class A products. In a residential environment they may cause radio frequency interference.

What we can supply

Current production. Stratix 5200, 5800, 2000, 2500 and ArmorStratix, plus wireless, routers and taps. Quoted with a delivered lead time.

Discontinued and mature. Stratix 5700 including the affected 10 port variants, Stratix 8000, 8300 and 6000, and expansion modules. Surplus and tested used.

The Stratix 8000 and 8300 expansion modules are worth asking about specifically. People need one MX module to add ports to a working switch and cannot source it.

We buy Stratix

Switches, expansion modules and taps. If you are replacing a network, the old switches have value to plants running the same generation. See Sell To Us.
