Siemens SM 332 Analog Output Modules

Siemens / SIMATIC S7-300 / SM 332 and SM 334

Every SM 332 analog output variant plus the SM 334 combined modules and the SM 338 position decoder.

The SM 332 is the analog output module family for the SIMATIC S7-300 rack. It drives valve positioners, variable speed drive references, analog indicators and anything else that takes a continuous signal. Variants differ by channel count and resolution.

SM 334 combined analog input and output

The two SM 334 variants differ by resolution, 8 bit against 12 bit. They are not interchangeable and the difference is invisible on the front of the module.

The SM 374 simulator is a niche part worth asking about. Commissioning engineers and training providers want them, they are long discontinued, and there is no substitute.

The DM 370 dummy module is the reserved slot placeholder. Siemens designed it so a second rack can be added later by swapping it for an interface module, without reinstalling or rewiring the first rack. If you are planning an expansion, fit one now.

Before you replace an output module

Check the load wiring. Siemens documents two-conductor and four-conductor connection for voltage outputs, and they are not equivalent. A four-conductor connection compensates for cable resistance. A two-conductor one does not, and on a long run the actuator sees less than the module is sending.

Check the current loop burden. Current outputs have a maximum load resistance. Exceed it and the output cannot reach full scale, which looks like a failed module.

Settling and response time. Analog outputs are not instant. If a loop is hunting, the module response time may be the cause rather than the tuning.

Behaviour on CPU stop. What an analog output does when the CPU goes to STOP or loses the L+ supply is configurable on some modules and fixed on others. Worth knowing before you swap one variant for another.
