B&R ACOPOS Servo Drives
B&R / ACOPOS servo drives
An ACOPOS drive has a modular mechanical design using plug-in modules. The base drive does not fully describe the installation, because the encoder interface and network card are separate items inside it.
ACOPOS is the B&R servo range, on European machine building across New Zealand packaging, plastics and printing.
The current is in the number
Take 8V1016.00-2.
| Part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 8V | ACOPOS servo drive |
| 10 | Series |
| 16 | Rated current. 1.6 A |
| .00 | Variant |
| -2 | Generation |
| Model | Rated current |
|---|---|
| 8V1010 | 1.0 A |
| 8V1016 | 1.6 A |
| 8V1022 | 2.2 A |
| 8V1045 | 4.5 A |
| 8V1090 | 9 A |
| 8V1180 | 18 A |
The dot suffix is not optional detail
Each current rating exists in several variants. The 8V1010 alone comes as .00-2, .001-2, .50-2 and .501-2.
Same current, different drives. The suffix carries the mains configuration and feature set, and they are not interchangeable.
Send the complete number including everything after the dot. A part list showing only 8V1010 does not specify a drive.
The plug-in modules
The most important thing about replacing an ACOPOS.
B&R describes the drive as having a modular mechanical design using plug-in modules. The encoder interface and the network interface are cards fitted inside the drive.
| What is a plug-in |
|---|
| Encoder interface. Resolver, EnDat, incremental and others are different cards |
| Network interface. POWERLINK and others |
| Additional I/O |
Three consequences
A bare replacement drive will not commission. Without the right encoder card it cannot read the motor.
The cards can usually be moved across from the failed drive, which makes a replacement cheaper than it first looks.
And a used drive may arrive with the wrong cards, or none. Ask what is fitted before buying.
So when you send us a drive number, tell us what motor feedback the machine uses and whether you are keeping the existing cards. It changes the quote substantially.
What is built in
Worth knowing because it explains why an ACOPOS panel looks sparse.
| Integrated |
|---|
| Line filter |
| Braking resistor |
| Electronic secure restart inhibit |
So there is often no separate EMC filter or brake resistor in the cabinet. If a machine has an ACOPOS and no visible filter, nothing is missing.
The restart inhibit is a safety function. If the machine's safety circuit relies on it, a replacement must carry the same capability, and whether a substitution is valid belongs with whoever holds the safety assessment.
The 8V range typically runs 3 x 400 to 480 V.
ACOPOSmulti is two kinds of part
The multi-axis system, and a common source of confusion when quoting.
| Part | Role |
|---|---|
| Power supply module | Feeds the shared DC bus. For example 15 kW, 22 A, 3 x 220 to 480 V AC input |
| Inverter module | Drives the axes. One or two axes per module |
Establish which failed before ordering. A dead axis is usually an inverter module; a dead group is usually the supply.
Inverter modules come in one and two axis versions, so a 15.1 A two-axis module covers a pair. As with any shared drive, a fault in a two-axis module takes both axes out.
Mounting type is part of the specification
A real ordering distinction on ACOPOSmulti, and easy to miss from a part number alone.
| Mounting | Notes |
|---|---|
| Cold plate | Heat into a mounting plate |
| Pass-through | Heatsink protrudes through the cabinet wall |
| Wall mounted | Conventional |
These are mechanically different units. A pass-through module needs a cut-out in the cabinet that a wall-mounted one does not, and the reverse leaves a hole.
Check how the existing module is mounted, and say so.
ACOPOSmotor puts the drive on the motor
Worth knowing if a machine appears to have axes with no drives.
The ACOPOSmotor 8DI module fuses the inverter with the motor, delivering power at the axis rather than from the cabinet.
| Specification | Range |
|---|---|
| Sizes | Three |
| Torque | 1.2 to 10 Nm |
| Power | 550 W to 2.3 kW |
| Safety | STO and SS1, wired |
The benefit is cabinet space. A machine with a dozen small axes has no drive section at all.
The consequence for maintenance is that a failure is a motor-and-drive assembly, not a card in a panel. It also sits in the machine environment rather than a cabinet, so ingress and heat matter more.
The optional fan
B&R notes an optional fan assembly can be added at any time to boost performance considerably.
So an ACOPOSmotor running at its thermal limit can be uprated with a fan rather than replaced. Worth asking about before specifying a larger unit.
The ACOPOS families
| Family | Notes |
|---|---|
| ACOPOS, 8V | Single-axis cabinet drives. Very widely installed |
| ACOPOSmulti, 8B | Multi-axis. Power supply module plus inverter modules |
| ACOPOS P3 | Current generation. 200 to 480 V AC, one to three axes |
| ACOPOSmotor, 8DI | Drive integrated into the motor |
| ACOPOSinverter, P74 and P84 | General purpose inverters, not servo |
| ACOPOStrak, ACOPOS 6D | Transport systems |
ACOPOSinverter is a different thing
Worth separating out, because the name suggests otherwise.
ACOPOSinverter P74 and P84 are general purpose variable speed drives, not servo drives. A P84 at 11 kW on 3-phase 380 to 480 V is a conveyor or pump drive.
A POWERLINK communication card is an option on these, which is how they join a B&R machine network.
So if a machine has an ACOPOSinverter, it is doing a different job from the ACOPOS servo drives beside it.
The motors
| Prefix | Range |
|---|---|
| 8LS | Synchronous servo motors |
| 8LV | Servo motors |
| 8JS | Servo motors |
| 8MS, 8MSA | Stepper motors |
| 8WS | Linear motors |
The motor feedback type decides the drive's encoder card. So when quoting a drive, the motor number matters as much as the drive number.
And a brake is a motor option. On a vertical axis, a motor without one drops the load when power is removed. Check the existing motor before substituting.
What to send us
The complete drive number, including everything after the dot.
The motor number, since it decides the feedback card.
What plug-in modules are fitted, and whether you are keeping them.
The mounting type, on ACOPOSmulti. Cold plate, pass-through or wall.
Which module failed, on a multi-axis system. Supply or inverter.
Whether the drive carries a safety function.
Before ordering a replacement
Check whether the plug-in cards can move across. That is often most of the cost.
Check the fan on an ACOPOSmotor if the symptom is thermal.
Check whether the fault is the axis or the group. On ACOPOSmulti that decides inverter against supply module.
Read the fault code. Following error and overcurrent usually point at the machine or the tuning rather than the drive.
What we can supply
Current production. ACOPOS P3, ACOPOSmulti supply and inverter modules, ACOPOSmotor, ACOPOSinverter, and the 8LS and 8JS motor ranges. Plus plug-in encoder and network modules, cables and connectors. Quoted with a delivered lead time.
Discontinued. The 8V ACOPOS range across current ratings and variants, and earlier ACOPOSmulti generations. Surplus and tested used, which keeps an existing machine exactly as it is.
Plug-in modules separately. Sometimes the actual fault, and always worth checking.
We buy B&R ACOPOS
ACOPOS drives hold real value, particularly the 8V range that plants still run and cannot buy new.
Keep the plug-in modules in the drive and matched drive and motor pairs together. Both add considerably to what a unit is worth. See Sell To Us.
